Small Animal Externship - Veterinary Students

Your commitment to veterinary medicine studies involves strong academic preparation combined with challenging and meaningful real-world experiences. Vets Pets would welcome the opportunity to discuss how an externship with our practice settings could enhance your future career.

Vets Pets’ network includes 25 small animal clinics in the Triangle and Eastern NC. Our focus includes general practice, after-hours emergency services, spay and neuter clinics, boarding/grooming facilities, and a surgical referral service.

Because Vets Pets has such a wide array of services, we can tailor your experience based on your professional interest. You can focus on one practice or rotate between board-certified surgical services, emergency services, general practice (some practices include exotics), and a spay/neuter clinic.

In addition to the opportunity to learn from our talented and experienced DVM staff, you will be assigned a mentor that will prove a valuable resource throughout your externship program.

Finalists for our program will be determined through an interview process to ensure that our opportunity is the best fit for your learning objectives.

Currently enrolled third and fourth year veterinary students are welcome to apply. Our patients have needs around the clock, so availability for evenings, nights, and weekends is expected, in particular for for those with interest in emergency.

Housing is available at certain locations.

We are open to flexibility for the length of your experience to best fit your academic needs and our available resources, with a typical length of two to six weeks.
