Accounting Extended Internship (Spring/Summer 2022 or Summer/Fall 2022)

Responsibilities

Principal’s extended internships (also known as a co-op) in the Accounting community offers an immersive professional experience that promotes experiential learning on the job. During these paid internships, interns will work full time while enhancing and applying their accounting skills and developing professionally. Once a candidate is selected for this program, they will be placed in one of the following business areas within the Accounting Community at Principal. There are opportunities within Retirement & Income Solutions, Principal Global Investors, U.S. Insurance Solutions, or Corporate and other supporting services.
Each intern opportunity will differ based on the needs of the business area. Generally, interns will be exposed to and be responsible for:
  • Preparing internal or external financial reports and/or tax returns
  • Participating in the financial statement close process
  • Testing and documentation of internal controls for SOX compliance
  • Variance and trend analysis
  • Assistance in preparation of budgets and/or forecasts
  • Assistance with projects

Qualifications

  • Working towards or have a bachelor’s or graduate level degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • Minimum 2.8 cumulative GPA.
  • Minimum of 6 or more hours of accounting or finance major coursework completed by the start of the internship.
  • Ability to solve problems using technology, such as Excel, query language (SQL, SAS), Power BI, etc.
  • Meaningful involvement with community or school organizations and/or through work experience.
All applicants must be available to work full time (40 hours per week during core business hours) from January – August 2022 or May – December 2022 in order to be considered for this position.

Location
Internship location will be either onsite in Des Moines, IA or virtually from your location selection.
