Youth Education Spring Intern

Background: Since its inception in 1999, the IRC NYC Youth Education Department has developed partnerships with New York City public schools, community-based organizations and local colleges and universities to provide refugee youth with year-round academic support, literacy training, and enrichment activities. The IRC NYC Youth Education Department programs provide refugee and immigrant youth with linguistically supportive, culturally responsive, trauma-informed learning opportunities. 

Essential Position Functions:
  •  Operationalize and monitor recruitment and hiring processes for IRC Youth Tutoring, including:
  • Managing promotion of volunteer job description
  • Conducting preliminary resume screening
  • Tracking application status
  • Communicating with IRC Community Partnerships department via professional email correspondence
  • Communicating with applicants via professional email correspondence
  • Compiling and organizing all applicant files, digitally
  • Monitor IRC Youth Tutor case note and SMART Goal completion
  • Manage IRC Youth Tutoring and IRC Leaders in Training programmatic data monitoring and evaluation (M&E) and draft final program reports
  • Update and create Youth Education department promotional materials, including securing accurate translations
  • Planning virtual college tours for the Leaders in Training program
  • Other duties as assigned

Learning Objectives:
The Youth Education Intern will:
  • Learn how to manage a large-scale volunteer hiring process for roughly 20 positions from the initial application stage to finalizing hiring paperwork
  • Learn how to manage monitoring and evaluation for complex educational programs
  • Learn about the various management responsibilities of interdependent educational programs
  • Learn about inter- and intra-departmental coordination processes across IRC in service of youth education programming

Requirements:
  • Clear IRC background check by deadline in order to work with minors and/or vulnerable populations
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel), G Suite, and in conducting internet research
  • Demonstrate self-starting, internet research-based approach to problem-solving
  • Demonstrate reliability and timely, high-caliber work-product completion
  • Demonstrate interest in learning about IRC history, philosophy, global work, and local efforts
  • Demonstrate respect for clients and staff from all racial, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, religious etc. background. Demonstrate a desire to continuously grow own cultural competency
  • Demonstrate respect for clients and staff of all identities.
  • Experience & commitment to education, and in particular, education for youth who have experienced forced migration.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English; additional fluency in a IRC high-frequency or high-need language preferred.
