Part-time Student Network Technician

This position is part of the Network Engineering Services (NES) team in Information Technology Services. The primary focus of this position involves working with NES and Physical Infrastructure (PI) teams to complete a campus wireless refresh project to move the campus to the latest Wi-Fi technology known as Wi-Fi 6.
Tasks include:
  • Access point transport, unboxing, configuration, labeling, and deployment.
  • Surveying locations for Wi-Fi signal, health, and identifying existing AP locations and mounting types
  • Performing location calibration
  • Updating documentation
  • Inventory management
  • Other duties as assigned
This position will include walking through various facilities on campus including offices, classrooms, lecture halls and laboratories.
Requirements
  • Must be a current University of Iowa student (freshman, sophomore, or junior) and be available to work upcoming semesters and academic breaks.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with multiple-year availability and availability during summer and academic breaks.
  • Most work will be completed between the hours of 8 am - 5 pm Monday through Friday, but occasional before and after hours work may be necessary.
  • During the academic year candidates must have blocks of time available to work (2 - 3 hours).
  • Summer employment required with desirable hours per week between 24 to 40
  • Lifting and carrying items up to 50 lbs.
  • Must meet University Driving Policy https://opsmanual.uiowa.edu/administrative-financial-and-facilities-policies/risk-management-insurance-and-loss-prevention-5 . Valid driver's licesne requried and 3 year driving history review will be conducted for position finalist.
  • ITS will conduct criminal background check for finalist.
Required Skills
  • Basic knowledge of Wi-Fi and computer networking
  • Ability to document and maintain status of projects and tasks via Excel worksheets
  • Ability to work independently
  • Detailed oriented
  • Comfortable with approaching and communicating with campus Faculty, Staff, and Students
Preferred Skills (a plus, but not required)
  • Scripting knowledge, especially programming in Python
  • Knowledge of Cisco and Aruba software and hardware
