The Community
The Dakota Valley School District serves the residents of Dakota Dunes, North Sioux City, Wynstone, and the associated rural areas. The school district is located in the extreme southeastern portion of South Dakota and is bordered by Iowa and the Big Sioux River to the east and Nebraska and the Missouri River to the south and west.
The Dakota Valley School District is part of the Sioux City metropolitan statistical area of 165,000+
people. The communities and residential developments in our district offer a wide range of options for housing and associated services in a suburban atmosphere. By sharing contiguous borders with Sioux City, Iowa and South Sioux City, Nebraska, we also have the advantages and amenities of a mid-sized metropolitan area. The district has a vibrant, diversified, and progressive business community which strongly supports the district and students.
The two largest communities are North Sioux City pop. 2700+) and (Dakota Dunes (pop. 2600+). North
Sioux City is a well-established community with a wide variety of residential areas with major industrial and commercial interests. The community of Dakota Dunes is a master planned community started in 1988 with a mix of residential, corporate, and medical offices. There are many recreational opportunities with-in the district, including McCook Lake, the Big Sioux and Missouri Rivers, and the 1500 acre Adams Nature Preserve.
Additional housing options exist in the residential developments of Deer Run, Riv-r-land Estates, Sandy Meade, and Wynstone which each feature unique opportunities for residents to consider in terms of lot size and location, ranging from rural settings to gated communities and residencies located on the Missouri River.
The community enjoys historically decreasing tax levies due to the continued growth of both the
residential and substantial commercial development in the district. The community support of the school district is outstanding, with the last bond issue for a new High School supported with 84% approval. The community partners with the district to focus on the success of each individual student.
