LTE - Wildlife Biologist and LTE - Wildlife Technician (Antigo)

In partnership with individuals and organizations, DNR staff manage fish, wildlife, forests, parks, air and water resources while promoting a healthy, sustainable environment and a full range of outdoor opportunities.

The Wisconsin DNR is hiring an LTE – Wildlife Biologist and LTE - Wildlife Technician located at our DNR Service Center in Antigo, Wisconsin.

This dual LTE appointment is comprised of two 20-hour positions for an expected work schedule of 40 hours per week. The intention is to hire one candidate on both positions. See below for more information on the positions.

Position 1, Wildlife Biologist:
This limited-term wildlife biologist position will serve as a Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) specialist for Lincoln/Langlade area. Duties will include surveillance permit data collection, interacting with the public, collecting, handling, and shipping CWD samples, maintaining CWD-related data, and coordinating with area staff. Additionally, this position will assist full-time staff with collecting biological data, designing, and implementing property development projects and participating in various wildlife surveys. 

45% - Assist with CWD data collection in the Lincoln and Langlade counties: processing and shipping biological samples, establishing, and monitoring self-service kiosks, collecting samples from collaborators, collecting data for issuing surveillance permits. 

35% - Assist with wildlife management activities: interact with public and appropriately route nuisance wildlife calls, collect information required to issue wildlife damage, nuisance, and city deer hunt permits, participate in wildlife surveys such as large carnivore tracking, deer aging, and bear research. 

20% - Assist with property management and development: work with local biologists to develop and implement property development projects that focus on hunter access and recreation management, monitor water levels on flowages that provide public benefit (rice and waterfowl hunting), and other duties as assigned.


Position 2, Wildlife Technician:
This position is responsible for a combination of wildlife habitat management and/or equipment maintenance in addition to providing customer service for property visitors in Lincoln and Langlade counties. Wildlife Technicians often operate machinery such as UTV's, ATV's, chainsaws, snowmobiles, hand tools, power tools, mowers, tractors and other motorized vehicles. This position will work some nights, and weekends.  

40% - Assist with the establishment and maintenance of native and introduced grasslands and wetland plants by operating heavy equipment and ATV's. This includes tilling and planting grasslands; maintaining dikes and water control structures; removing invasive plants and brush through mowing, manual pulling or by herbicide applications. Remove brush and fencerows on wildlife properties by mowing, chainsaws and herbicide application. Prepare and plant wildlife food patches and sunflower fields.

30% - Assist with the implementation of the prescribed burning program, including maintaining and preparing equipment necessary for prescribed burning such as small engines, pumps, water tanks, hand tools, and personal protective equipment. Assist in the installation of fire breaks by operating heavy equipment, mowers, tillage implements, and coordinating contractors when necessary. 

20% - Assist with the maintenance of equipment including farm tractors, forestry mowers, skid-steers with mower attachments, chainsaws, ATV's, small engines, pumps, hand tools, and personal protective equipment. 

10% - Assist with Canada goose and mourning dove banding. Complete summer deer observations and upland bird brood observation surveys.

Job Details
This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position. LTE positions do not automatically lead to permanent state employment or enjoy the same benefits as permanent employees; however, these positions do offer valuable work experience and an opportunity to learn more about career opportunities with the Department of Natural Resources and the State of Wisconsin.  

LTE employees are limited to working 1039 hours per position within a twelve-month period.

In order to be considered for this position, you must be a resident of the State of Wisconsin.

Qualifications
Required: 
- General knowledge of wildlife habitat types and management practices
- General knowledge of deer and wildlife biology and life requirements
- Effective communication skills
- Possess a valid driver's license

Preferred:
- Safety certifications (First aid, chainsaw, ATV) *Note: certifications and training will be provided
- Computer, GPS and Mapping (GIS) skills
