RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
  • Work all Orientation and On Iowa! programming (see note under “Expectations for more information about summer availability)
  • Provide a welcoming campus experience for students and their families including facilitating a small group for incoming students
  • Assist new students with registration techniques, if necessary. This may include Schedule Builder in MyUI
  • Refer students and families to campus resources and services as appropriate throughout programs
  • Serve on panels and speak to incoming families and students
  • Assist with On Iowa! Leader spring recruitment (including recruitment events & interview days)
  • Evaluate Orientation Services programs and activities
  • Perform other duties as assigned

EXPECTATIONS:
  • Complete Spring and Summer training programs: Enroll in LS:1017 Orientation Leader Training which will take place on Tuesday and Thursdays from 11:00am-12:15pm during the spring semester
  • Attend the entirety of all Orientation Services commitments, including the Spring Training Course and On Iowa! Leader Training (Orientation Leaders will be allowed to enroll in a summer class and hold additional employment if it does not conflict with scheduled orientation dates and with written approval from the Program Coordinator)
  • Effectively maintain professional boundaries with new students
  • Assist students and family members, displaying patience, concern, and openness
  • Observe all University and Orientation Services policies
  • Serve as a role model for student staff and for incoming students and their families
  • Be a positive member of the Orientation Team
  • Communicate effectively with a wide range of people
  • Perform all responsibilities in a punctual, reliable, and conscientious manner

APPOINTMENT LENGTH:
  • Summer Term: May 8 – July 14 (This is a target range and could change)
  • On Iowa Term: August 7 - 25
  • Orientation Leaders will be expected to help with our winter programs in December 2023 and January 2022
  • Orientation Leaders will be expected to help with our programs during finals week (2023). These will be scheduled based on finals availability (students will not be expected to work during a final) and dates will be shared during spring training.
  • Orientation Leaders will be expected to support our On Iowa programming in 2023 and will be paid hourly for your work:
  • August Prep and Training: August 7-12
  • Program Week: August 13-25
  • Specific dates and required time commitments for summer programs will be distributed during spring training.

NOTE: All staff hired for 2023 are expected to fulfill duties for Summer Orientation, On Iowa! Week, and Winter Orientation. If an individual is unavailable for August due to specific, non-negotiable conflicts (ex: graduation, Resident Assistant Training, etc.), then the OL must consult the Program Coordinator as soon as possible (no later than March 25) for approval. All students involved in the fraternity and sorority life community are excused from work week and parts of recruitment and can not be fined for your involvement in On Iowa! We are happy to work with you on figuring out a schedule around this.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
The Summer Orientation appointment will be paid on an hourly basis, bi-weekly.
  • First Year OLs: $12.00/hour
  • Second Year OLs: $12.50/hour
  • Executive Team: $13.00/hour
Housing will not be provided to Orientation Leaders. You will earn 3 semester hours of elective credit for successful completion of LS:1017 Orientation Leader Training course. There is a possible internship noted on transcript.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Successful completion of a Criminal Background Check & a Student Disciplinary Records Check
  • Good disciplinary standing with the University and Orientation Services
  • Minimum 2.50 cumulative GPA (3.5 high school GPA for first-year students)
  • Minimum 24 s.h. completed by May 2023 • Successful completion of LS:1017 Orientation Leader Training course. (Must receive 80% or higher in the class.)
  • Additional weekday employment positions or enrollment in summer classes from May 8-July 14th is permitted with written approval from Orientation Services Program Coordinator

REPORTING LINES: This position reports directly to the Program Coordinator and Graduate Assistants for Orientation Services
