Astronomy Observatory and Laboratory Assistant

Physics and Astronomy Department, University of Iowa
Pay: $10.50/hr, 10 hours per week
 
Job Summary
The Physics and Astronomy Department seeks an undergraduate student to assist in setup, observations, and take down of telescopes for lab class and outreach, as well as setup, take down, and cleaning of Astronomy lab classrooms.
 
Responsibilities and Duties
The student will work with Astronomy graduate student Teaching Assistants and Astronomy Laboratory Coordinator and Observatory Manager Caroline Roberts to setup, put away, and staff telescopes when students come to use them for lab and the public comes to view them for public observing nights. The student will talk to the students and public about what is being observed through the telescope, as well as the type of telescope, etc. This will usually happen in 3-hour blocks twice a week, from approximately 7:30-10:30 PM (though this will vary), and will sometimes also happen in the afternoon. (Approximately 6 hours per week)
 
The student will also be in charge of making certain laboratory classrooms are setup for the labs being taught there each week. This will involve putting away supplies from the previous week, sweeping and vacuuming, and setting up future supplies. (Approximately 3 hours per week)
 
Finally, when Caroline Roberts is working in the observatory, the student may be asked to be present if the work requires a second individual to complete tasks. (Approximately 1 hour per week)
 
Qualifications and Skills
Responsibility with equipment, prompt attendance, and careful attention to detail
 
An interest in Astronomy and enthusiasm about communicating to the public and students about Astronomy. No prior knowledge of Astronomy required, though it is preferred
 
Ability to work an irregular schedule, including nights and some weekend nights
