Biological Science Technician

Summary

This position is located with United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Plains Area (PA), Plant Stress and Germplasm Development Research in Lubbock, TX. The incumbent will provide research support to the Research Geneticist of the unit.


Duties


  • Collects, prepares, and evaluates sorghum samples and supporting records; maintains records and locates and compiles data and other information from various sources.
  • Participates in the planning, execution, monitoring, and closing of multi-disciplinary sorghum research projects.
  • Research sorghum planting and harvesting using large mechanical farm equipment.
  • Searches for and synthesizes literature pertinent to research for new procedures or techniques in the laboratory, field, greenhouse, adaptation, and mitigation.
  • Tabulates, statistically analyzes, and summarizes data using personal computers and software packages.

Qualifications


GS-05
The qualification requirements for this position at the GS-05 grade level includes one-year of specialized experience at the GS-04 grade level, or its non-Federal equivalent, that includes; experience collecting, maintaining, and measuring biological samples related to plants; and recording, and compiling the results of the data.
OR
Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses have been directly related to the position to be filled. Related degrees may include Plant Breeding, Plant Physiology, Agronomy, National Resource Management, Plant and Soil Science, Range and Wildfire Management, or Horticulture.
OR
A qualifying combination of graduate education and experience as described above.

GS-06
The qualification requirements for this position at the GS-06 grade level includes one-year specialized experience at the GS-05 grade level, or its non-Federal equivalent, that includes experience collecting, maintaining, and measuring biological samples related to plants, recording, compiling, and interpreting research results and data
OR
Education: One full year of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees may include Plant Breeding, Agronomy, Natural Resources Management, Plant and Soil Science, Range and Wildfire Management, or Horticulture.
OR
A combination of graduate level education and specialized experience directly related to the position as described above.
