Research Computing Student Technologist

OneIT Research Services is looking for a student who is excited to learn about research technology by helping to support the efforts of Research Services to enable and accelerate research for the University of Iowa.

A computing background is not expected, but a desire to learn about technology is.

As a Research Computing Student Technologist, you will have the opportunity to work with a supportive, and inclusive team to learn new skills, both professional and technical, while supporting research computing at Iowa.

Primary job duties will be associated with, but not limited to, the hardware and software maintenance of high-performance computing and research data storage systems, campus engagement, and workshops. In addition to these duties, we provide the opportunity for our students to learn about new technologies and help lead projects within our environment. These opportunities range from helping to develop services and communications to deploying technologies and writing software to assist the research community with their work. We work with our students to try and match projects and opportunities to their goals and interests.

If you are looking for hands on learning in a dynamic and supportive environment filled with interesting technology, we would like to talk to you!

The experience gained here can be a valuable addition to your resume and will provide you with insights into how areas such as Big Data and Big Compute operate behind the scenes. Students in similar positions on campus have taken positions with companies such as AWS, Cerner, EPIC, and McGladrey. In addition to finding full time technology positions, several have also been able to take advantage of experience acquired here to find internships with exciting companies such as Lucas Films. We also strive to provide our students with projects that have real impact.

Qualifications:
  • Interest in working on and learning about research computing systems involving high performance computing, research data storage, and data analytics.
  • Basic familiarity with computing and strong desire to learn new skills in this area are encouraged.
  • Lifting and carrying items up to 50 lbs.
  • Availability to work during the summer and winter break is desirable. During breaks, students are eligible to work up to 40 hours per week.
  • This position is restricted to U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents, due to federal government restrictions on the use of export-controlled software and equipment.
  • The selection process will include a criminal background check on final candidate.

Required Work Schedule
  • Regular business hours, up to 20/week during academic sessions, between 8 am-5 pm. Flexibility around student schedules during these hours.
  • This position will require on-campus work; however, hybrid work is also available.
  • During the academic year candidates must have blocks of time available to work (2 - 3 hours).
