PUBLIC HEALTH PREPARDNESS MODELER

INTRODUCTION

This non paid student volunteer position is located in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR), Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response, Office of Strategy, Policy, and Requirements (SPR). ASPR is headed by the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response who reports directly to the DHHS Secretary. ASPR is a component of the Public Health Service (PHS) and is responsible for ensuring a One Department approach to developing public health and medical preparedness and response capabilities, leading, and coordinating the relevant activities of DHHS. This position is workplace flexible and can be established as remote or routine telework depending on the preference of the candidate. The on-site location, if desired, will be at Constitution Center (400 7th Street, SW, Washington DC 20024), directly above L'Enfant Plaza metro stop.

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a Public Health Preparedness Modeler. The selected candidate will assist with developing a modeling process to create capability targets and inform Requirements for Medical Counter Measures. They will help apply this model to draft Requirements for Medical Countermeasures (MCMs) against Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) Threats.



MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

As a Public Health Preparedness Modeler, some of your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:
·      Digest and incorporate relevant literature pertaining to building models for public health preparedness and response into the current draft Requirements Modeling SOP. 
·      Adjust the proposed Model process to incorporate missed parameters or variables that improve the model workflow.
·      Edit reports related to Requirement setting, development and acquisition of MCMs as it relates to the newly developed model SOP.
·      Support employee as their liaise with subject matter experts of other Federal agencies and non-Federal organizations whose activities are related to the work of the Office.
·      Create flow diagrams to visually represent scenario building and Requirements modeling process.



Knowledge Required by the Position

·      Basic or limited knowledge of public health, statistics, modeling, scenario planning, epidemiology, health security.
·      Basic or limited knowledge of policies related to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear (CBRN) threat agents and emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) and their risks.
·      Knowledge of elements of good writing and effective communication habits.
·      Basic Microsoft office skills including word and PowerPoint



Supervisory Controls

·      The employee receives assignments with an outline of overall objectives, priorities and deadlines.
·      Work is planned and carried out and appropriate tools and techniques are chosen. Competed work is reviewed for adequacy of coverage, soundness of judgment and conclusions, and adherence to established guidelines.

Start Date and Duration
This position will begin in late May/Early June for a duration of no more than 6 months. Starting dates will vary and duration can vary. The number of hours per week for this position will be determined jointly by the volunteer and the program management.
