Job Description
As the Geologist 2, you will be an essential member of the Construction and Materials Bureau and will help maintain the quality assurance program for aggregates used in highway and bridge construction.

What you’ll do:
In this position, you will advise aggregate producers, construction and materials staff on the intent of applicable codes, standards, and specifications for materials used in the construction and maintenance of highways. You will also direct the technicians on the standard principles, methods, procedures, and policies related to the sampling, inspection, and/or testing of materials used. 
This Geologist 2 will direct and operate basic scientific tests to determine the physical properties of materials used in highway construction and maintenance projects. You will operate X-ray fluorenes and X-ray powder diffraction test equipment. You will need to explain the use of equipment and procedures used by material produces to aggregate producers, construction and materials staff. You will also be responsible to store aggregate records as well as communicate data or observations accurately and legibly. 
This Geologist 2 will Perform field work at quarries and gravel pits in assigned District and assist Staff Geologists in their assigned Districts when needed. Assess proper ledge control of approved quarry beds for material usage. Obtain representative samples for physical and chemical analysis for problem solving. Write final report and make recommendations to resolve issues and problems. Update old geologic sections or construct new geologic sections for quarries. Consult with Staff Geologists to determine individual bedding breaks within the quarry. Accurately measure individual beds in quarry using laser range finder. Conduct PCC pavement service history evaluations. Compile pavement history files for locations of aggregate sources being evaluated. Physically inspect and evaluate aggregate sources on PCC pavements. Identify locations for drilling cores from pavement for further examination. Conduct field work evaluations on Revetment Stone performance.
Requirements:
Occasionally (1-33% of the time) lifts/lowers, carries and push/pull various amounts of force within the “heavy work” as defined by the US Department of Labor; team lift, or mechanical assist recommended for weights over 75 pounds. Related work examples: 70-pound bag of aggregate, 60-pound asphalt hot box, 118-pound beam breaker, and 80-pound concrete beam in mold, etc.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in geology, physical geography, or a closely related geological science;
OR
graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in a natural science, computer science, math or engineering field and two years of full-time professional experience in an earth science related position including groundwater, soils, environmental geology, geographic information systems or other related earth science specialty.
