Epidemiology - Public Health Surveillance

The Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center (NMCPHC) ensures Navy and Marine Corps Readiness through leadership in prevention of disease and promotion of health. Through the ORISE program, the NMCPHC provides opportunities to participate in on-going applied research and development projects in the areas of Environmental Health, Engineering, Biological Sciences, Public Health, Occupational and Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Sanitation and Hygiene, and Laboratory Services.
What will I be doing?
Under the guidance of an epidemiologist mentor, you will:
  • Collect, evaluate and provide public health surveillance data analysis and reporting for Navy and Marine Corps members and beneficiaries.
  • Develop/conduct epidemiologic studies and surveillance in the areas of clinical epidemiology, infectious disease, behavioral health, occupational and environmental epidemiology and injury and healthcare epidemiology.
  • Provide rapid response to request for outbreak and disease information.
  • Provide epidemiologic consulting and assistance for studies.
  • Integrate health data with other data types to provide robust analysis.
  • Investigate and study acute and chronic conditions to determine the public health impact of intervention programs.
  • Prepare raw health data for epidemiologic analysis.

What is the anticipated start date?
NMCPHC is ready to make an appointment immediately. Exact start date will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate.
What is the length of the appointment?
This ORISE appointment is full-time twelve month duration. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
What are the benefits?
You will receive a stipend to be determined by NMCPHC. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

About ORISE
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Qualifications
Successful completion of a 2+year graduate study in an accredited college or university master’s or higher degree that included a major study in an academic field related to Epidemiology (MPH, MS, PhD).
U.S. Citizenship is required, must be able to pass a background investigation.
SAS 9.4 experience is desired.
Microsoft Office experience is desired
