Student Assistant, UI Health Care Marketing and Communications
Purpose:
The Student Assistant in Marketing and Communications will support the Marketing and Communications department in various roles. Which could include outreach and engagement, event support, administrative support, writing and data analysis.
Goal:
- To equip the student assistant with the interpersonal and professional skills necessary to be a competitive candidate for a full-time career after graduating from the University of Iowa.
- To provide necessary administrative support in a busy marketing and communication division to keep our work engaging, high touch, and impactful.
Basic job function and responsibility:
- A combination of team and independent work on projects and tasks.
- Answering phones calls and redirect when necessary.
- Take registrations and answer customer questions about events and requirements for their participation.
- Provide support for specific projects such as assisting with events, distributing communication, organizing data, and compiling reports.
- Assist with communications and development of promotional materials for outreach events and activities.
- Complete administrative tasks such as mailings, shipping materials.
- Must be able to anticipate project needs, discern work priorities, and meet deadlines with little supervision.
- Must be willing to work occasional evenings and weekends.

Will use the following systems:
- Microsoft Office Suite: Outlook, Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint
- Web-based programs: Constant Contact, Qualtrics, Anthology, etc.
Qualifications needed:
· Must be current UI student.
· Prefer major in business, communications, journalism and mass communications, or marketing.
· Proficient using the latest versions on Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, and ability to learn event management, database and data software.
· Excellent communications skills, including writing, proofreading and speaking.
· Ability to anticipate project needs, discern work priorities and meet deadlines with little supervision.
· Great customer service ethic and high expectations for quality.
· Strong problem-solving, excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, creativity, resourcefulness, and an ability to work under pressure are essential.
· Attend evening and weekend special events.
· Must be able to stand for periods of time and be able to lift 25 pounds.
Experience to be gained:
- Working in a professional setting in the health care industry
- Experience working with all departments in MarCom: Digital and Multimedia, Outreach and Engagement, Strategic Communications, Brand Strategy and Marketing
- Communicating with other professionals in person, on the phone and through email correspondence
- Writing experience through promotional text, personal communications, proposals and planning documents
- Data entry and reporting with acute attention to detail
- Program and event planning and management
- Organizational, planning, and time management skills

Time commitment:
Up to 20 hours/week during the spring and fall semesters and up to 40 hours/week during the summer and winter break, with occasional night and weekend hours. At least 20 hours/week of summer 2024 availability required. At least 15 hours/week of availability required during the fall and spring semesters. Working winter break is preferred. Thanksgiving and spring breaks are optional.
Rate of pay:
$12 per hour with performance-based increases at 6-months
