Civil Rights & Equal Opportunity Internship (Municipal Intern)

Responsibilities

 

About CREO: CREO protects our residents against discrimination in employment and public accommodations by investigating discrimination claims and enforcing civil rights laws. We also work to prevent discrimination and to increase inclusion and economic equity for our residents and businesses through the City’s diversity certification program and monitoring and enforcing labor standards and prevailing wages for workforce. 

 

Responsibilities: 

  • The intern in the Civil Rights Division will become familiar with Chapter 38 of the City of Kansas City, Missouri ordinance governing the Division, and state and federal statutes prohibiting discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, and gender identity), disability (including the Americans with Disabilities Act), religion, familial status, national origin, and citizenship status.
  • Explores landmark Civil Rights cases including Plessy v. Ferguson and Brown v. Board of Education.
  • Learns how to perform intake, create an investigative plan, explore theories of discrimination, conduct mediation, and resolve discrimination complaints filed under the City’s Human Rights Ordinance and other applicable laws (Ban the Box, the CROWN Act, the Tenants Bill of Rights).
  • Learns tools utilized by CREO including the MyKCMO website and mobile application and ARC.
  • Explores different interview styles and identify confirmation bias.
  • Assists in developing effective working relationships with community organizations, governmental agencies, and other stakeholders involved in civil rights and equal opportunity issues.

Qualifications

REQUIRES high school diploma or GED and enrollment in an accredited college, university, or trade school.
