Description

Hennepin County is seeking a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Analyst to work on a wide variety of mapping projects applying cartographic and analysis skills. You will be responsible for data governance, map creation, and remote sensing tools management including new high density lidar. You will also provide assistance with projects for the following lines of business: Health and Human Services, Law, Safety and Justice, Resident Services, and Disparity Reduction.



 

Hennepin GIS is comprised of three teams: GIS Business Services (GBS), GIS Technical Services (GTS), and GIS Project Services (GPS). This position will be a member of the GBS team and will report to the GIS Business Services (GBS) Supervisor.

Location and hours:
This position is remote. Remote workers may be required to come on-site 0 to 12 days a year for work meetings, trainings, or for any other reasons that their supervisor may deem necessary (may include additional days for onboarding and new employee training). Supervisors will provide as much advance notice as practicable. Work hours will be Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. 

 

While this position is designated as remote, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota.


New employees who are hired into remote or hybrid positions between January 2, 2022 to December 31, 2024, will receive $500 toward the cost of establishing consistent internet connectivity, payable upon completion of 6 months of employment.

At this time, employees may be eligible to receive an additional cash merit of up to $1906.94 that can be earned annually based on performance.


In this position, you will:  

  • Support GIS Coordinators and in some cases lead advanced GIS spatial analysis projects. 
  • Lead the maintenance of the county basemap data and cartography.
  • Lead the maintenance and enhancement of the Hennepin GIS internal and external web presence, including Hennepin GIS SharePoint site and GIS Open Data Hub.
  • Perform complex GIS analysis to develop client focused outputs, maps, and dashboards that integrate data.
  • Develop web mapping and applications using ArcGIS Online and Portal.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of county remote sensing data.
  • Communicate GIS Office strategic direction.
  • Perform end user support as needed.

 

Need to have:

  • One of the following:
    • Five years or more of information technology experience.
    • Completion of approved Hennepin County IT internship and three years or more of IT experience. 
    • Completion of five college/vocational/technical information technology courses and three years or more of IT experience. 
    • Associate's/vocational/technical degree in a field listed below and three years or more of IT experience. 
    • Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, management information systems (MIS), information technology or an approved information technology field related to the position and 1 year or more of IT experience.


Nice to have: 

  • Four years or more of professional GIS experience.
  • Experience:
    • Working with the following ArcGIS products: ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, and ArcGIS Online.
    • Working with ArcGIS Hub.
    • Working with imagery and lidar.
    • Conducting complex spatial analysis and enterprise data editing. 
  • GIS experience in a public sector organization.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Census and American Community Survey data.
    • Cartographic principles and the ability to create visually appealing maps.
    • Python scripting.
  • Ability to:
    • Communicate effectively with project team and product end users.
    • Complete project work on time.
    • Collaborate around a common cause to create appropriate GIS solutions.
    • Work independently.
