Looking for a CDC internship that spans across many public health topic areas and helps recruit, train, and mentor the next generation of public health leaders?

CDC’s STEM Education and Training team is looking for energetic, enthusiastic, and motivated applicants to join our team to support the CDC Science Ambassador Fellowship (SAF). This program promotes teaching public health sciences in middle and high school classrooms by offering trainings and resources for middle and high school Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) teachers. Since 2004, CDC has trained 500+ STEM teachers in epidemiology and public health reaching an estimated 1 million students across 45 U.S. states.

The position will provide the intern with the opportunity to develop experience in public health STEM education design, development, and training. The intern will also learn about a range of public health concepts and topics from CDC experts.

Specific responsibilities and projects can be adapted to fit the candidate’s experience, education, and career development interests. Some key responsibilities include: 
• Identifying public health topics, resources, and data sets to help design public health STEM curriculum.
• Designing public health curriculum using curriculum design best practices (e.g., Understanding by Design) and national standards (e.g., Next Generation Science Standards).
• Reviewing and refining case study outlines developed by SAF teachers.
• Conducting focus groups with teachers on the integration of reading primary literature (e.g., MMWR) into STEM classrooms.
• If in Atlanta or able to travel to Atlanta, help facilitate training sessions for teachers from July 15–19, 2024.

The intern will also have the opportunity to participate in trainings offered by other programs in the branch, including the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) program and the Laboratory Leadership Service (LLS) fellowship. EIS and LLS are premiere training programs that give health professionals a 2-year, postgraduate stint on the forefront of public health, learning and practicing epidemiology in more than 100 field investigations in the United States and around the world.
