Collection & Distribution Apprentice Assistant Operator

City of Red Wing is currently accepting applications for a full-time collection & distribution apprentice assistant operator to operator position in the Public Works Department - Public Services Division. Monday through Friday work schedule. Performs a variety of tasks to maintain and repair the City’s water distribution and sewer collection system to ensure the safety and quality of the City’s water supply. All levels of qualifications will be considered for this position. 

The apprentice assistant operator is an entry-level, career track Operator position that provides an opportunity to learn by assisting with operation and maintenance of utility infrastructure, including water treatment facilities, booster stations, wells, and reservoirs; wastewater treatment plants and lift stations; and water distribution and sewage collection systems.  It is the intent that individuals would work toward higher level positions upon gaining the necessary experience and operator licenses.

Essential Job Functions

  • Operate and/or clean and maintain facilities, equipment and tools, vehicles and buildings and grounds.
  • Monitor and record facility operations through site visits and through the use of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.
  • Make adjustments to treatment plants, lift stations, booster pump stations, chemical feed systems, and water reservoirs operational parameters and controls under the direction of Operators. Operate treatment plant equipment after receiving the necessary training to do so.  This could include pumping, process, chemical feed and monitoring equipment.  Equipment can be automated or be manually operated.
  • Utilize preventative maintenance (PM) compute software to receive work task assignments and complete documentation of preventative maintenance activities.
  • Assist others with complex, non-routine equipment maintenance and repair activities.
  • Perform routine operational and maintenance activities independently after receiving the training and experience to do so.
  • Participate in daily and weekend rounds and inspections independently after receiving the training and work experience to do so.   Complete laboratory tasks, maintain records and monitor facility and equipment operations associated with weekend rounds using documented Standard Operating Procedures and checklists.
  • Operate Utility Division equipment including trucks, skid-steers, portable pumps, vactor truck, sewer jetting and rodding equipment, sewer cameras, jack hammers, and tampers.
  • Assist with Utility Division construction activities, including installation of water mains or sewers, valves, manholes, and catch basins.
  • Assist with utility maintenance, including cleaning sewers and lift stations, flushing water mains, exercising valves and hydrants, and repairing water main breaks.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including snow removal.

Experience, Education, Certifications, Physical Requirements

All positions have a residency requirement of forty (40) minute driving distance of Public Works 229 Tyler Road N. 

This position will be filled at one of the following levels depending upon candidate qualifications:

Apprentice Assistant Operator:  Must have HS diploma or equivalent and valid driver's license. Must have or obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with 6 months of hire.  Must have or obtain a Class A CDL with tanker endorsement within a year of hire and be able to pass a DOT physical. Minnesota Class D Water Treatment Operator’s Certificate or Class SD or D Wastewater Operator Certificate within 2 years of hire.                         

Apprentice Assistant Operator starting pay of $23.56 per hour. 

Assistant Operator:  Must have HS diploma or equivalent. Must have a Class A CDL with tanker endorsement and be able to pass a DOT physical. At least one Minnesota Class D Water Treatment Operator’s Certificate AND Class D or SD Wastewater Operator Certificate.                                                                                    

Assistant Operator starting pay of $26.05 per hour.

Operator: Must have HS diploma or equivalent. Must have a Class A CDL with tanker endorsement and be able to pass a DOT physical. Must possess at least one Minnesota Class C water or wastewater or collection and one Class D water certificate or Class SD or D wastewater.                                                                                                                         

 Operator starting pay of $29.03 per hour.

**The successful candidate would be automatically promoted to a higher level upon achieving the minimum certifications for that position. 

Physical Requirements:

  • The work is generally manual work.
  • This employee will encounter frequent exposure to noise, vehicle exhaust, grease, oil and grime.
  • Frequent exposure to seasonal temperature extremes.
  • Workers are exposed to a wide variety of chemicals and all manner of unknown materials that may be in sewage, some of which are likely to present hazards if not correctly handled.
  • Work around moving equipment requires caution as well as use of safety apparel.
  • Work may include intermittent lifting, pushing or pulling of over 60 pounds.
  • Work may include excavating or working in confined spaces.
