What will I be doing?

As a fellow in the NCSES Research Ambassadors Program-Environmental Statistics Innovation, you will have the opportunity to explore a federal career and gain a competitive edge as you apply your education, talent, and skills in a variety of settings. Fellowships are based on assigned research or technical projects.

The goal of this program is to engage in the development of evidence-based policies directed at environmental innovation, sustainability, and climate change by exploiting the wealth of text-based information on environmental and climate research and development (R&D) and innovation. The set of analysis tools, suitable for addressing the priority policy questions, will draw on advanced modelling to exploit the wealth of information within the data. The series of analytical outputs will fulfill the stated priorities and help inform future efforts within the project as well as contribute to the development of evidence-based policy. Activities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Identifying publicly available data sources that can be used to identify business innovation with environmental benefits.
  • Developing Natural Language Processing (NLP) approaches to environmental innovation classification
  • Developing environmental innovation identification models based on Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) approaches.
  • Collaborating with international organizations on efforts related to the management and analysis of administrative data on environmental statistics.
  • Comparing and contrasting results of this research with forthcoming NCSES survey data.
  • Developing knowledge of state-of-the-art statistical, analytical, and visualization methods and techniques through reading, meetings with federal and non-federal researchers and analysts, and participation in professional meetings.

You may also have the opportunity to make use of, engage, and improve key NCSES and National Science Board products such as Science and Engineering Indicators, the National Patterns of R&D Resources, the Diversity in STEM Report, and the Annual Business Survey.

Your project will be assigned based on funding availability and mentor selection. You will learn more about project opportunities during the application process. ORISE will share your assigned project with you before you accept an appointment offer.

Where will I be located?

This Research Fellowship is a hybrid role and requires in-person participation at the NSF headquarter in Alexandria, VA.

Participant Benefits

Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by NCSES. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location.

Other benefits may include the following:

  • Training and Travel allowance for professional development.

Duration

This Research Fellowship is a 12-month appointment and can be extended for a total period of five years based on performance and need. Note: The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOE, NSF, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
