EXPERIENCED FIREFIGHTERS

 

We are seeking highly skilled and experienced individuals to join our team of great Firefighters at the Leawood Fire Department. Firefighters play a vital role in both the City of Leawood community as well as the surrounding Kansas City Metro community. Each shift will be different than the last, ranging from helping put out a fire to saving the life of someone in distress.

You will need to be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, great at multi-tasking and comfortable making decisions quickly.  You will work a 24-hour Berkley shift schedule which requires the candidate to be flexible in working during normal business hours as well as nights, weekends, holidays and subject to being called in when needed. Candidates will go through a vigorous training phase during their first year that will provide you with the knowledge and skills to be successful at the role of a Firefighter in the City of Leawood!

The City of Leawood offers career development opportunities in which the employee could increase their experience, training, and pay.  The position is eligible to receive merit-based pay increases every year (up to 5% increase).  Employees also receive a Time In Service Bonus every three years of employment on their anniversary date equal to 5% of their annual salary.    

 

Summary of the Position: The Leawood Firefighter responds to fires, emergency medical calls, hazardous materials incidents, technical rescue incidents, or other incidents as assigned; participates in fire prevention & public education activities, training, and fire/arson investigation as assigned; assist with station, vehicle, and grounds maintenance as well as other technical/specialty work as assigned. 

 

General Overview of Responsibilities: 

  • Performs a wide variety of tasks on the incident scene related to fire suppression, basic life support, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, using approved techniques and following Fire Department Standard Operating Guidelines, where applicable.
  • Participates in the development of goals and objectives at the shift level; is familiar with and assists in meeting Fire Department goals and objectives.
  • Establishes and maintains command and control of emergency and non-emergency incidents in the absence of an officer, until relieved by a senior firefighter or Fire Department officer.
  • Identifies opportunities for improving service delivery and shift performance; reviews with supervisory personnel and assists with implementation.
  • Responsible for attending and participating in education/training opportunities; stays  abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of emergency services.
  • Assists in delivering didactic and practical training programs, classes, etc. to Fire Department personnel; presents information and educational presentations to various organizations, schools, and the public on fire safety and related topics.
  • Participates in inspections and pre-emergency planning on various facilities including schools, churches, and other buildings to ensure adherence to fire and life safety codes, as assigned by the Fire Prevention Division.
  • Participates in fire prevention and public education activities as assigned.
  • Responsible for responding, investigating and resolving citizen inquiries and complaints. 
  • Assists in preparing specifications for apparatus and equipment for Fire Department Operations. 

 

Minimum Requirements:  Must have a minimum of one (1) year of experience as Firefighter.  Five (5) years of experience, preferred. Must have Firefighter I & II Certifications (NFPA 1001 compliant, IFSAC or Pro Board preferred) and Hazardous Materials Operations certification (NFPA 472 compliant, IFSAC or Pro Board preferred).  Must have an Emergency Medical Technician license — KSBEMS.  Must possess a minimum of a valid Kansas Class B or Missouri Class E driver’s license or be able to obtain within two (2) years of hire.   

 

Paramedic License: Current KSBEMS or NREMT certification as a Paramedic. This is an optional certification; it is not required. **

 Base Rate of Pay: $21.71 / hour - $23.45 / hour, DOQ*
 The position is hourly based and is eligible to receive premium pay based on the Fire Operations calendar.  

*Based on experience, applicants will come in as Firefighter II or Firefighter III.

**Applicants that hold a Paramedic License are eligible to receive an additional 10% stipend on top of base pay.

  • Copy of current Driver’s License
  • Current Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) Results (Results must be within the last year)
  • Firefighter I & II Certifications (NFPA 1001 compliant, IFSAC or Pro Board preferred)
  • Hazardous Materials Operations certification (NFPA 472 compliant, FSAC or Pro Board preferred)
  • Emergency Medical Technician license - KSBEMS (preferred) or NREMT with the ability to get Kansas licensed.
  • If applicable, Paramedic license – KSBEMS (preferred) or NREMT with the ability to get Kansas licensed.
