STUDENT ASSISTANT JOB DESCRIPTION

Student Assistants provide a critical service keeping the Hardin Library open by working at desks, checking materials in and out, and providing assistance to library users and staff. Student Assistants are required to learn and perform a wide variety of tasks throughout the library.

AVAILABLE FALL SHIFTS 

Sunday 11:45-9:10pm

Monday 7:15am- 9:10pm

Tuesday 7:15am- 9:10pm

Wednesday 7:15am- 9:10pm

Thursday 7:15am- 9:10pm

Friday 7:15am- 6:10pm

Saturday 9:45am- 6:10pm

STUDENT ASSISTANT TASKS

·        Greet patrons and staff entering the building by extending a verbal or nonverbal greeting

·        Provide excellent customer service to library patrons

·        Open and close the library

·        Working at a service desk: check materials in and out, answer basic questions

·        Create welcoming environment for patrons

·        Check out and put library materials away

·        Light maintenance of the book collection (Dusting, straightening, organizing)

·        Report problems from users

·        The ability to answer questions about the location of library materials, classes or meetings

within the library and provide directions to UI locations on the West campus.

·        Data entry and verification projects in excel

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

·        Must be a current student at The University of Iowa

·        Must be available to work evening and/or weekend shifts

·        Must be available to work a minimum of 6 hours per week, and 2 shifts when school is in

session

·        Must be available to work a minimum of 15 hours per week over summer break

  

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

·        Good communication skills

·        Reliable attendance history

·        Previous customer service experience, especially in a library

·        Familiarity with Excel and the Microsoft suite of products

WEEKLY WORK GUIDELINES || MINIMUMS, MAXIMUMS & REQUIREMENTS:

Maximum 20 hours per week during the academic year,

Maximum 40 hours per week during summer and academic breaks,

Minimum 6 hours over 2-shifts/2-days per week
