Description

The Hennepin County Environment and Energy Department is seeking a full-time Environmental Educator to implement environmental awareness and outreach strategies for department programs, including zero waste, climate action, and protecting natural resources. The Environmental Education and Outreach unit is responsible for educating the community on department services, raising awareness about environmental issues, engaging with the community to understand how environmental issues impact them, encouraging environmental stewardship, and motivating people to act individually and collectively to preserve and enhance the environment for future generations.

Location and hours:
This position is hybrid and will be performed both onsite at the 701 Building at 701 Fourth Avenue South, Suite 700, Minneapolis, MN, 55415, and remote as job duties require. Work hours will be Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with occasional evenings and weekends for community events and meetings.


New employees who are hired into remote or hybrid positions between January 2, 2022 to December 31, 2024, will receive $500 toward the cost of establishing consistent internet connectivity, payable upon completion of 6 months of employment.

In this position, you will:

  • Develop and implement environmental awareness and education plans.
  • Produce environmental education content, including articles, videos, graphics, and campaigns, for digital newsletters, websites, social media, print materials, and other communication channels and implement other messaging strategies for department programs.
  • Develop and maintain environmental education resources, including educational supplies and activity guides.
  • Research content, audiences, resources, education approaches, and messaging strategies to inform department plans and programs.
  • Conduct environmental education, including presenting, giving tours, providing training, and attending events on environmental topics to a wide variety of audiences – from youth to technical experts.
  • Evaluate education and awareness-raising efforts.
  • Coordinate with internal and external partners to advance environmental education efforts.

Need to have:

  • One of the following:
    • Bachelor's degree or higher in environmental education, environmental studies, environmental sciences, environmental communications, public administration, business administration, or other field appropriate to the position.
    • Four or more years of experience in general administrative work related to the management of departmental/organizational operations or in a specialty area appropriate to the position.
  • A valid driver's license, access to reliable transportation to visit community sites throughout Hennepin County, and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.

Nice to have:

  • Two or more years of experience in environmental communications or environmental education.
  • Experience:
    • Working on environmental and climate issues.
    • Developing and implementing environmental awareness, communication, or education plans.
    • Creating educational content on environmental issues for a variety of communication channels and audiences.
    • Planning and conducting environmental education programs or public presentations.
    • Making scientific, environmental, technical or other complex information understandable and relatable to a general audience.
    • Researching topics, audiences, education approaches, and messaging strategies, identifying key takeaways, and using the insights to inform plans and programs.
    • Organizing, updating, and analyzing education and outreach data.
    • Coordinating with teams of staff or partners from various work areas or different organizations and agencies on environmental education.
    • Using communication software, such as Microsoft Office suite, e-newsletter platforms, web content management platforms, and social media in a professional context.
  • Ability to:
    • Operate effectively in a fast-paced, hybrid, remote, and in-person environment.
    • Develop education approaches and messaging strategies for a wide array of audiences and tailor approaches for specific audiences.
    • Work effectively with and gain input from various staff members and partners.
    • Prioritize and manage multiple projects.
    • Work with people and organizations that represent significant diversity in culture, values, education, occupation, and income.
