Athletics Marketing Student Assistant

The Iowa Athletics Sports Marketing Intern is an in-office and event-based position that provides support to the Athletics Marketing unit. Marketing student assistants are trained to plan for and execute all Athletics home competitions. Marketing Interns show leadership, professionalism, enthusiasm, critical thinking skills and exceptional customer service while representing the University of Iowa and Iowa Athletics.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate pre-planning activities, including script writing, organizing music for events, setting up in-game activations and fan giveaways.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with internal and external units before, during, and after events as needed.
  • Set up and execute giveaways and activations for events, either with coworkers or individually.
  • Coordinate with coworkers to execute event-based and in-office tasks.
  • Assist in the planning and management of Iowa, Big Ten, and NCAA Championship events.
  • Act as a liaison between Athletics, University service units and organizations and community businesses to conduct operations.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: General supervision is received from the Assistant Directors of Marketing and the Director of Marketing. Daily supervision is received from the Marketing Coordinators.

 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Functional supervision is exercised over event personnel and volunteers.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Reasonable experience in handling multiple assignments, conflicting demands or priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to think critically and quickly, while course correcting as needed.
  • Reliable, dependable, punctual, and professional.
  • Strong communication skills (written, oral and interpersonal) with a focus on customer service.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to accept direction and constructive criticism.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Ability to work effectively independently with little to limited instruction.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a willingness to do variety of tasks.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Windows and Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Premiere Pro, InDesign)
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and lift/carry up to 20 lbs.

 

DEVELOPMENT: Sports Marketing student assistants receive regular check-ins with supervisors. Acquired skills will prepare Sports Marketing Interns for future job opportunities. 

 

HOURLY RATE: $10 per hour. Opportunities for increase based on performance and longevity after first year.

 

WORK HOURS: 

Student employees work a maximum of 20 hours per week including office hours and event hours. Events occur on nights and weekends, and occasionally during normal business hours. Events and office hours may also take place over school breaks (Thanksgiving, Winter Break, Spring Break). Individual class schedules will be taken into consideration. Intern working schedule is subject to change based on events and individuals needs per week.
