Data Center Engineering Intern

What you'll do

The Mobility lab team is responsible for the creation of new environments, as well as the operational support of existing ones. Viasat works closely with other lab facility managers to ensure clean, compliant, and operational labs that Viasat’s developers and customers can use. Requests are received daily for new labs as well as fixes and improvements to these labs and it is the responsibility of the Mobility lab team to fulfill such requests.

The day-to-day

The intern will help build a new APC system for monitoring, management and securing in the Carlsbad Commercial Air lab datacenter. This requires integration with existing network and deployed systems and documenting the as-built procedures as well as a framework for supporting the deployed systems. You will work directly with other datacenter engineers to deploy these systems as well as cross-team with professionals from other functions that will assist in network integration.

Examples of day-to-day tasks include:

  • APC appliance deployment and administration
  • Linux and windows administration
  • Security posturing and implementation
  • Network monitoring and management
  • Datacenter operations

What you'll need

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field
  • A basic knowledge of IP addressing and subnets
  • Knowledge of cable standards (ethernet, coax, etc.)
  • Understanding of LAN/WAN networks
  • A willingness to learn new systems and technologies
  • Troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to work on a geographically distributed team
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to commit to a 10-12 week summer internship

What will help you on the job

  • Scripting experience using Python, JavaScript, REST or equivalent language
  • VMWare or AWS/Cloud experience
  • Basic automation experience
  • Knowledge or experience with tools such as Git, Artifactory, Jenkins, Puppet, Ansible, Docker
  • Organization and time-management skills
