MISSE - Programming Assistant - Afro-American Cultural Center

BASIC FUNCTION

Assist in the day-to-day operation of the MISSE areas: Afro-American Cultural Center, Latino Native American Cultural Center, Asian Pacific American Cultural Center, Pride Alliance Center, and International Student Support and Engagement. Assist in taking messages, responding to e-mail and/or Facebook/Instagram marketing and messages, contacting campus partners & community agencies & programming. Assist in daily maintenance & upkeep of MISSE spaces.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain consistent working schedule in MISSE area
  • Ability to work in-person and in virtual spaces (i.e., hybrid model)
  • Successfully plan and execute programming with student and pro staff across MISSE areas, with an emphasis in your home area
  • Assist in the administrative operation of the area by taking messages, responding to e-mail and/or social media messages on behalf of the area, contacting campus partners and community agencies
  • Create a warm and welcoming environment and encourage students to utilize SWIPE technology for attendance purposes
  • Be present and assist as needed during assigned center and large-scale diversity programs sponsored by the University of Iowa, such as MISSE celebrations weeks and months, open houses, and affinity graduations
  • Assist in the physical maintenance of the MISSE facilities by assisting in daily cleaning and upkeep of spaces, tracking the use of Area property, reporting structural damages to Coordinator, safely securing the building at the close of shift or center hours, as well as for university designated breaks and holidays
  • Attend weekly staff meetings, monthly MISSE gatherings, and semesterly professional development trainings as scheduled
  • Communicate effectively using program area GroupMe’s, email, and verbal communication methods
  • Meet with supervisor regularly (weekly/bi-weekly)
  • Assist in other new initiatives and projects from home area 
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be a registered UI student
  • Able to work 10-12 hours per week
  • Comfortable with and able to work with international students, students of color and students who may identify as LGBTQ+
  • Good verbal, written, email, and other technology platform (e.g, GroupMe) communication skills
  • Strong interest and experience in multicultural education and social justice issues
  • Have problem solving skills, experience with conflict resolution, and takes initiative
  • Proficient technology and social media skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in student leadership & multicultural programming (e.g., event planning, community involvement) preferred
  • Eligible for work study
