Student Front Desk Assistant

The Magid Center for Writing and Division of Interdisciplinary Programs are hiring for the position of Student Front Desk Assistant to work primarily with the Iowa Summer Writing Festival. Student Front Desk Assistant – Magid Center for Writing, Iowa Summer Writing Festival

Job responsibilities: Staffing the front desk at 24 Phillips Hall to support guests of the Iowa Summer Writing Festival, as well as undertaking other office projects  for the Magid Center for Writing and Division of Interdisciplinary Programs. Primary job duties include:

  • Greeting and directing guests
  • Printing and copying documents
  • Assembling folders and participant materials
  • Assisting guests with personal or lab computers
  • Answering phone and email
  • Designing graphics and promotional materials
  • Planning, writing, and distributing communications via email and social media 
  • Compiling program data

Location, hours, and pay: On-campus at 24 Phillips Hall. While the Iowa Summer Writing Festival is in session (June 13-June 28 and July 10-July 28), applicant must be available to commit to a consistent schedule of at least seven 3-hr shifts per week (available shifts are 9:00am-12:00pm and 12:00pm-3:00pm Mon-Sun). Availability for ~10 hrs. training and orientation June 3-June 12 is also required. Pay starting at $12.00/hr.

Required skills/qualifications: Customer service experience, familiarity with Microsoft Office, fluency in written English

Preferred skills/qualifications: Declared student in a writing- or events management-related program (Writing Certificate, Creative Writing, English, Journalism, Communications, Event Management Certificate, etc.) or student involved with other Magid Center for Writing programs (student literary publications, Iowa Youth Writing Project); strong editing/proofreading skills; data entry experience; graphic design experience
