Project: Study of the Root Causes of Motor Vehicle Crash Occupant Injuries in Black and Hispanic Communities

Organization: Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Injury Surveillance Program

Timeline: August – December 2024

Motor vehicle (MV) crashes are one of the leading causes of death in the United States and Massachusetts. Several studies over the past two decades have shown that communities of color face inequities in MV injuries and deaths on both state and national levels. Particularly, Black and Hispanic MV occupants (drivers and passengers) are disproportionately affected by motor vehicle crash injuries and deaths compared to White occupants.

The purpose of this project is to identify structural, environmental, social, and cultural factors that contribute to inequitable MV traffic-occupant crash injuries among Black and Hispanic MA residents; protective factors; and potential strategies to address inequities. To better understand these factors, we plan to conduct 10 in-person focus groups with English-speaking Black and Hispanic residents of Dorchester, Mattapan, Roxbury, Brockton, Holyoke, Springfield, and Worcester aged 18-34 years old.

We are looking to hire an intern to facilitate at least five focus groups and take notes for the other discussions from August to October 2024.
