Student Assistant - Criminal Investigations Division (Syracuse)

Background/Areas of Interest: Criminal Procedure Law and Tax Law

The person selected for this position will gain extensive knowledge and experience with the investigation and prosecution of criminal tax fraud cases, as well as the recently changed Discovery Statutes (New York State Criminal Procedure Law §245) and the tax secrecy provisions of the New York State Tax Law. Any person accepting this position must adhere to strict confidentiality laws.

DUTIES:
Coordinate with Criminal Investigations Division (CID) staff in the District Office to meet requirements for Discovery related to criminal investigations referred for prosecution:

* Review submitted discovery files for confidential information;
* Redact confidential tax information and other non-disclosable information and identify the basis for redactions on discovery documents and label accordingly;
* Create redaction logs to track work product and provide accurate information thereon;
* Compile electronic files into new PDF files and apply bates stamps;
* Coordinate with CID attorneys and CID District Office Management teams to assist with transfer of discovery materials through Aspera Vault.

Other Tasks:
* Develop and test new case management system reports.
* Develop and test case management system enhancements.
* Work with CID Forensic Lab staff to compile electronic case evidence.
* Assist with technology related matters, including reports.

Proficiency with available systems:
* Develop and maintain proficiency with all Department data and document management systems/programs, including but not limited to Excel, Microsoft Word, Adobe, Able to Extract, Adobe Acrobat, SAS, Law Manager, Crystal Reports, Evidence on Q, CARTS, Cognos, SharePoint, e-MPIRE and the agency's Intranet system. Must have good research and Internet search abilities.

Report to Criminal Investigations Division (CID) attorney:
* Receive assignments from supervisor.
* Keep supervisor apprised of status of assignment completion.
* Seek clarification from supervisor as needed.
* Perform additional projects and miscellaneous tasks as assigned, in a timely, accurate and professional manner.
* Exhibit a willingness to accept new assignments and provide support for new initiatives.
