IT Data Center Student Assistant

This student position is a member of the Data Centers team, a group within Information Technology Services (ITS)-Enterprise Infrastructure (EI). This student position will assist the team in performing its role to receive, store, install, cable, troubleshoot, and document enterprise IT systems within the Data Centers. This position provides an opportunity to do hands on work, to learn, and to build real-world job skills including planning, collaboration, communication, and customer service.

Ability and willingness to grow into this work as a member of the Data Centers team. Examples of this work include:

  • Receive, install, troubleshoot, and document the IT systems and their communication and power cables within the Data Centers.
  • Configure systems that support power and remote access for the installed IT systems
  • Parts and Inventory Management: sort, store, and label disks; surplus equipment; inventory management.
  • Customer Service: use of email; form templates; communicating in time sensitive situations
  • Special Projects: documentation; auditing; data entry
  • Shipping & receiving; physical workspace arrangement; available to greet guests at data center; organizing cabinets.

Requirements:

  • Student with an interest in learning about a multi-faceted organization with varied job duties.
  • Due to the hands-on nature of this work, the position is on-site primarily at the Coralville ITS data center site with some work shifts at the Iowa City ITS data center sites.
  • Ability to perform physical functions required of position: lift and move technical equipment weighing up to 25 pounds; and required ability to bend, stand, and climb ladders as necessary.
  • Ability to contribute to team through duration and consistency of time at work (e.g. 15-20 hours per week semester – more hours available during summer).
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing work priorities and assignments.
  • This position is restricted to U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents, due to federal government restrictions on the use of export-controlled software and equipment.
  • A valid driver license and occasionally driving a UI vehicle between work locations is required to perform the duties of this position.  Three-year history driving review will be conducted for finalist.  Adherence to UI Driving policy: https://opsmanual.uiowa.edu/administrative-financial-and-facilities-policies/risk-management-insurance-and-loss-prevention-5
  • Criminal background check for finalist

Desired Skills:

  • Customer service experience in a previous role, or a willingness to develop those skills as part of your work with the Data Centers team.
  • Self-driven to learn about the systems, environment, and software that the Data Centers team uses in the course of its work.
