Compensation:

Pay Range: 

  • Geology Trainee - $25.05 per hour
  • Geology Associate - $27.62 per hour
  • Professional Environmental Geologist - $66,560.00 annually

* Salary can vary depending upon education, experience, or qualifications.

Position Summary & Responsibilities

This position (K0224231)

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has a Geology Trainee/Geology Associate/Professional Environmental Geologist opening in Dodge City. This position will conduct comprehensive inspections of regulated facilities utilizing above ground storage tanks (ASTs) and/or underground storage tanks (USTs). Completes subsurface site assessments, audits inventory/operational records, oversees tank closures and removals, and as appropriate collects soil and/or groundwater samples for field and/or laboratory analysis to determine contaminate cleanup status.  Responsible for resolving all noncompliance issues in a timely manner.  Assures work is accurate and consistent, following QA/QC and agency procedures.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:  

Assist in the review and evaluation of geological and hydrogeologic technical work plans, proposals, and reports for remediation projects.  Assists agency project managers by monitoring equipment and techniques used by consultants to ensure work is being conducted in conformance with approved work plans.

Respond to spills, releases, and discharges of regulated substances that may threaten or harm public health and/or the environment.  Responses may be considered "emergency" in nature and may occur outside of normal business hours.  Provide consultation and instruction to industry representatives, cleanup contractors, and any other concerned persons regarding the containment of spilled substances and remediation of impacted material.  Consult with supervisor/DEA/BER regarding a thorough and timely cleanup.  Oversee accurate disposal of impacted soils/materials.

 

Qualifications

Education:  

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Earth Science, Geoscience, or another related field.

Licensing & Certification:  

  • Valid Driver's License - Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.

Minimum Qualifications:  

Geology Trainee

  • Bachelor's degree in geology/hydrogeology/earth science/geoscience or another related field.
  • Within 6 months of hire, incumbent must pass a physical which certifies the individual can work in the necessary protective gear.
    Incumbent is required to work towards professional geology licensure ultimately maintaining a professional geology license while in this position.

Geology Associate

  • Bachelor's degree in geology/hydrogeology/earth science/geoscience or another related field.
  • Within 6 months of hire, incumbent must pass a physical which certifies the individual can work in the necessary protective gear.
    Incumbent is required to work towards professional geology licensure ultimately maintaining a professional geology license while in this position.
  • Valid Intern Geologist certificate recognized by the Kansas Board of Technical Professions.

Professional Environmental Geologist

  • Bachelor's degree in geology/hydrogeology/earth science/geoscience or another related field.
  • Within 6 months of hire, incumbent must pass a physical which certifies the individual can work in the necessary protective gear.
  • Incumbent is required to work towards professional geology licensure ultimately maintaining a professional geology license while in this position.
  • Valid Professional Geologist license recognized by the Kansas Board of Technical Professions.

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Sampling, Data Logging.
  • ARC GIS.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people.
  • Ability to use personal protective equipment.
  • Proofreading, editing, attention to detail.
  • Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access.

Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements: 

  • Must pass a physical which certifies the individual can work in the necessary personal protective equipment. Job does require physical activities involved with the essential functions of the job.
