Environmental Health Technician (Rodent/Leaf)

Under the direction of the Public Health Manager, this position assists the Departments Leaf Blower (50%) and Rodent Control (50%) programs. The activities responded to might fluctuate depending on the season, operations and goals of the programs.  This position consults and educates the public regarding conditions on their property that attract rats. This position also educates the public and businesses regarding the leaf blower ordinance which prohibits the use of gasoline or propane powered leaf blower. This position administers the enforcement and administrative adjudication process to ensure all violations of both programs are corrected. The position requires significant knowledge of various pest control methods, integrated pest management including public health/environmental and climate resiliency matters.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Specific assignment will include some or all of the following):

  • Enforces and inspects properties for code compliance
  • Informs the public on corrective actions necessary on their property for pest control
  • Creates awareness and educates the public and business community regarding the leaf blower and rodent control programs
  • Issues notices of violation and summons violators to administrative adjudication hearings
  • Initiates legal action necessary or required for code compliance and presents court or hearing testimony under oath.
  • Prepares forms and letters advising property owners and tenants of possible violations and deadlines for correcting deficiencies
  • Helps determine the appropriate action needed to eliminate pests
  • Patrolling areas of the City in order to be proactive to leaf blower activities
  • Applies integrated pest management in controlling rodents(rats) and other pests in Evanston
  • Documents and updates resident requests using the Evanston 311 system in a timely fashion
  • Performs other related duties and assignments as needed or required
