Senior Staff Attorney

Upper Seven Law seeks a creative and experienced litigator to join our team as Senior Staff Attorney. In this role, you will help develop Upper Seven’s litigation strategy, write information requests, conduct legal research, lead day-to-day litigation tasks, and mentor interns, legal fellows, and staff attorneys. This role reports to the Litigation Director and the Executive Director.

Ideal candidates work well independently, have excellent writing, organization, and prioritization skills, and pay rigorous attention to detail. Candidates should have experience writing briefs, developing complaints, and engaging in discovery. A generalist background or specialization in constitutional law is preferred.

Essential qualities include the ability to remain calm under pressure, think innovatively and strategically to solve legal problems, work collaboratively with others, supervise junior attorneys and staff, and give and receive feedback with grace.

The position is based in beautiful Helena, Montana. Well-known for its hiking and mountain biking trails, gorgeous Victorian architecture, and close community feel, the capital city is also the hub of Montana law and government.

Responsibilities & Opportunities:

  • Serve as lead or co-counsel in federal and state court proceedings on a broad range of public interest topics.
  • Draft and edit briefs, memos, press releases, and other documents related to ongoing litigation and new projects. • Investigate potential cases and conduct legal research.
  • Engage extensively with U7L attorneys, support staff, and external partners and stakeholders.
  • Propose new litigation, ideas, and projects to advance U7L’s mission.

Experience & Qualifications:

  • JD from an accredited law school; active and in good standing membership with the Montana bar, or the ability to be admitted in Montana.
  • Exceptional writing and legal research abilities.
  • 3+ years of relevant litigation experience.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex legal concepts.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with a passion for social justice and accountability.
  • Ability to take calculated, strategic risks.
