Our agency head is Secretary Janet Stanek, who was appointed by Gov. Kelly in Dec 2021. We are made up for three divisions: Public Health, Environment, and Health care finance (which includes KanCare). We are the only agency in the nation to have these three entities under one roof. This allows us to take a holistic approach to the health and well-being of all Kansans.

 

About the Position

  • Full/Part-time: Part-time.  The position is allowed up to 480 hours per year max.
  • Work Schedule: Monday – Friday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Compensation

Hourly Pay Range: $15.03 / hour

 

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is offering an internship in our Office of Public Affairs – Public Information team to help organize and assist in daily activities and ensure effective communication with stakeholders, the digital team and the agency’s digital modernization initiatives.  The intern will work with teams across the agency to educate and build support for modernization efforts.

 

Internship Project Duties

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is seeking one (1) Intern to join our Internship Program in the Office of Public Affairs – Public Information department located in our Curtis State Office Building for the summer/ fall time period.

An intern opportunity to learn about supporting the digital team in agency’s digital modernization initiatives.   While learning how to serve in a leadership role in incorporating new tools and processes.  Assist in strategic planning and implementation for digital modernization initiatives.  Including but not limited to the following:   

  • Gaining experience toward a professional career in Marketing or Communications, Advertising or Public Relations, or a field that requires similar skills. 
  • Work with teams across the agency to educate and build support for modernization efforts.  Assist those teams during the “building” phase as needed and help them as needed once they are ready to launch.
  • Update the agency’s website as needed to incorporate the new digital initiatives as they are ready to launch.  This may include providing training and technical assistance to web editors across the agency who will be assisting and implementation efforts. 
  • Best practices in digital communications/ marketing. 
  • Use of electrical audiovisual equipment.
  • Good time management and the ability to communicate in a professional manner.
  • Ability to work well independently and within a team.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a college program in Marketing or Communications, Advertising or Public Relations, or a field that requires similar skills. 
  • Valid Driver's License - Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.
  • Must hold and maintain a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation to sites.
  • Due to the nature of the business, the incumbent must be a minimum of 18 years old at the time of employment.
  • As a condition of employment, will be subject to a criminal background check.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current college student, majoring in Marketing or Communications, Advertising or Public Relations, or related fields. 
  • General understanding of how people use digital media and a general working knowledge of best practices in digital communications/ marketing is desired.
  • Knowledge of website management and/or UX design is preferred, but not required.
  • Working knowledge of website content management systems is a plus, but not required. 
  • Proficiency in Word and Excel
  • Possess excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work well independently and within a team.
