Human Trafficking Research Project Graduate Internship Fall 2024

Location: In-person or hybrid

 

This internship is designed for graduate students with interest in research, policy drafting, and organizing with directly impacted communities and individuals with lived experience on issues related to sex trafficking prevention. The Advocates undertakes research to drive policy change that prevents human trafficking by addressing the root causes of sex trafficking in Minnesota through a human rights-based approach. 

 

Interns will gain practical skills in research and analyzing current federal and state policy in human rights, as well as identifying best practices in the fulfillment of socio-economic rights. Interns will also gain skills in community organizing. During the internship, individuals will help with legal and policy research and will participate in focus groups and consultations with subject matter experts with lived experience about necessary policy changes that overlap with many other human rights issues and engage a variety of sectors on many different levels of influence and authority. This internship focuses primarily on domestic human rights issues in the U.S. and Minnesota.

 

 

Primary duties and responsibilities may include:

  • In-depth research on human rights issues in Minnesota and in the U.S.
  • Assist in drafting reports and policy recommendations.
  • Assist in the planning and participate in consultations and engagement with organizations and with subject matter experts with lived experience. 
  • Assist with all aspects of work at a small non-profit, including administrative tasks, data management, etc

Required experience and qualifications

  • Excellent writing and organizational skills
  • Interest in human rights issues 
  • Problem-solving skills 
  • Self-starter 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team 
  • Sensitivity to diverse cultures

Additional skills of interest

  • Experience in organizing and working alongside impacted communities 
  • Familiarity with Minnesota legal system and system actors
  • Experience in research
