Position Summary & Responsibilities

The position (K0243871)

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has a Breath Alcohol Trainee opening in Topeka. This position will observe annual on-site inspections of agencies and of the Intoxilyzer 9000. This position is in office only.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:   

Review current training material (training manual, PowerPoint presentation and practical scenarios) and observe at least 3 classes. Learn and become signed off for at least 2 tasks in the training class portion of the training checklist. Grades tests determining operator certification, determines pass/fail of each class participant, files paperwork, and provides post-class documentation to the operators.

Maintains accurate quality control records. Accurately collect, enter, and update data in applicable databases and filing systems. Ensure data is entered in a timely manner and meets quality standards. Become signed off to verify accuracy and precision of instruments after return from CMI due to repair and prior to being returned to the agency.  Become signed off to check dry gas cylinders containing alcohol standard at the KDHE office on the specified Intoxilyzer 9000 to ensure the cylinder meets our quality assurance requirements. Become signed off to mail gas cylinder to agencies as necessary. Check all liquid standards of 0.020, 0.040, 0.080, 0.150, and 0.300 used for training and site-inspections with the specified Intoxilyzer 9000 meet all requirements necessary.

 

Qualifications

Education:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in toxicology, chemical, physical, or biological science.

Licensing & Certification:  

  • Valid Driver's License - Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in toxicology, chemical, physical, or biological science.
  • Two years of experience in laboratory procedures/analysis.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Proofreading, editing, attention to detail.
  • Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access.

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Master’s degree in toxicology, chemical, physical, or biological science.
  • Experience with travel and travel planning.
  • Experience in writing SOPs and training documents.
  • Experience with public speaking, training, giving presentations.
  • Experience working with breath testing equipment and Intoxilyzer 9000.
  • Experience working with analytical equipment.
  • Ability to independently problem solve, creative thinking.
  • Ability to work in a team.

Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements

  • HIPPA, blood borne pathogen as well as many other safety trainings are required to be completed after hire. 
  • Certification through hazardous materials training for the dry gas cylinder handling and mailing is required and provided after hire.
