Career Exploration Support Internship

This intern will assist the Career, Opportunity, Readiness, and Enhancement (CORE) program instructors (Vocational Development & Training Specialists) with the development and facilitation of a 12 to 24-week pre-vocational curriculum.
Qualifications:
  • Seeking a degree in a human service field (Psychology, English, Sociology, Education, Communication, Recreation Therapy, etc.)
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of issues that affect people with disabilities
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills  
Internship Location: 3000 South Avenue, La Crosse, WI and various community locations
Internship Hours: 10-15 hours per week during CORE classroom operation:
Internship Functions or Goals:
  • Assist with the development of community-based prevocational services
  • Create prevocational materials, worksheets, and various activities
  • Identify and schedule outings, tours, and volunteering opportunities
  • Assist students in the classroom as well as in the community
  • Promote program and assist with student recruitment
  • Maintain a professional relationship with students’ support staff (families, guardians, funding sources, social workers, DVR counselors, etc.)
  • Assist with managing caseloads and related paperwork
  • Adapt and work with changing situations, diverse populations and environments
Physical/Sensory/Cognitive Requirements:
This internship is primarily spent in either a formal classroom setting or out in the community; walking, standing, sitting, and occasional lifting 5-10 lbs is involved. Mobility within the rural and urban community is required on a weekly basis. Occasionally may push/pull wheelchairs and assist with transfers in or out of wheelchairs for adults of various sizes if applicable. Occasionally required to sit at a desk or in meetings for an extended period of time. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from participants, staff, and the general public when using technology or in face-to-face interactions.
