Undergraduate Lab Assistant
The Bongers Lab is starting out and in need of an undergraduate lab assistant. We study the role of the gut microbiome in sepsis and sepsis recovery, with a particular focus on how the microbiome affects post-sepsis muscle weakness.
Starting as an assistant for general lab tasks, the position comes with an opportunity for moving into more responsibilities as education proceeds. We anticipate the student will move into research opportunities over their time in the lab as their skills develop.
Starting duties include general lab tasks such as:
- Dishes
- Running to core facilities for supplies
- Making solutions
- Autoclaving tools and supplies
- Data entry
- Assisting with animal work (mice)
- As skills develop, we hope to involve the student in RNA and DNA isolation and sequencing, animal experimentation, and molecular biology and metabolomics techniques.
Required Qualifications:
- Sophomore or greater with a science degree focus (Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology, Genetics, Exercise Science, Pre-Medicine, or other hard science discipline)
- GPA 3.0 or better
- Ability to work 5-10 hours per week - must have at least a 3-hour open slot 3 times over the week during daytime working hours 8:00 AM-5:00 PM
