Student Pharmacist - Specialty Pharmacy and Ambulatory Care
University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is seeking student pharmacists enrolled as pre-pharmacy or currently enrolled at the College of Pharmacy for positions within Specialty Pharmacy and Ambulatory Care Pharmacies.
Position Description
Under general pharmacist supervision, coordinates and performs student intern/technical activities on behalf of Specialty Pharmacy Services and the Ambulatory Care Pharmacies. The student will report to the Specialty Pharmacy Manager.
Position Hours:
- Average at least 12 hours per week (up to 20 hours/week during classes, up to 40 hours/week over breaks)
- Primarily 2–5-hour shifts M-F between 0630-1800 and Sunday 0800-1630
- At least 1 weekday (M-F) evening shift per week. The shift will be scheduled from ~1600 to close. The pharmacy currently closes at 1800.
- Additional weekday hours (between the hours of 0700-1800) are available.
- At least 1 Sunday weekend shift per 4-week schedule. The shift will be scheduled from 0800-1630.Additional weekends may be available
- At least 1 weekday (M-F) evening shift per week. The shift will be scheduled from ~1600 to close. The pharmacy currently closes at 1800.
- Preference for availability to work up to 40 hours over summer and holiday breaks
- Work schedules are based on availability outside of classes and exam blocks
Position Responsibilities Include:
- Document and provide services consistent with established policies, procedures and accreditation requirements.
- Provide patient/customer service. Communicate with the general public, patients, and other health care personnel in accordance with established guidelines. Receive and screen prescriptions for completeness and check for prescription readiness.
- Utilize and maintain the ScriptPro Robot.
- Fill/refill prescriptions.
- Prepare prescriptions for mailing and shipping
- Perform inventory maintenance activities.
- Generate and/or maintain (includes filing) appropriate records related to prescription dispensing such as hard copies of prescriptions, hemophilia medication patient profiles, mailing/shipping forms/logs, and prescription quality assurance audits.
- Answer the dedicated prescription refill telephone line and provide outbound refill calls.
- Within scope of practice and training assist pharmacist to facilitate pharmaceutical care to patients including but not limited to patient counseling, medication reconciliation, and clinical follow-up.
- Complete benefits investigations, prior authorization, copay assistance sign-up, and assist patients with triaging insurance-related issues
- Perform activities involving narcotics and controlled substances
- Maintain area orderliness and cleanliness.
- Assist in on the job training of new technicians.
- Coordinate technical activities with other members of team.
- Possible compounding of medications requested for prescriptions, clinic doses, and inpatients
- Complete and maintain compliance with all competencies and education requirements
Minimum Eligibility Requirements:
- Currently enrolled as a pre-pharmacy student or pharmacy student (P1 or P2) at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy
- Must be enrolled as intern or pharmacy technician, trainee with Iowa Board of Pharmacy prior to commencement of employment.
Starting Hourly Rate (non-intern) - $15/hour
Rate upon Pharmacy Intern Registration - $18/hour
