Summer 2025 Internship Job Description

Job Summary:

Great Plains Casualty (GPC) is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual for a Summer Internship position. This internship offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in one or more of the following departments: Operations, Claims, and Finance. Interns will have the chance to either shadow across all three departments or focus on just one area, depending on their interests and career goals. The internship will provide valuable exposure to key aspects of the insurance industry, including policy adjustments, claims handling, and financial processes. Dates for the internship are tentative and will be discussed upon selection. 

This internship is an excellent opportunity to develop professional skills, gain insight into a growing insurance company, and work directly with industry experts in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Who We Are:

Great Plains Casualty (located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa) is an admitted property & casualty insurance carrier that was founded in 2007. We pride ourselves in providing high-quality, convenient, and affordable insurance solutions to the transportation industry nationally through an efficient digital business model.

 

At GPC we specialize in serving both owner-operators of heavy trucks operating over the road under a lease agreement, and contract carriers operating under their own authority in the final mile/ home delivery segment of the transportation market. We are licensed in 49 states and the District of Columbia and pride ourselves in our AM Best rating of A- (Excellent).

Internship Structure:

  • Option 1: Multi-Department Shadowing – Interns will rotate between Operations, Claims, and Finance departments, gaining exposure to each area.
  • Option 2: Department-Specific Focus – Interns can choose to dedicate their time to the Operations department, focusing deeply on that area for the duration of the internship.

Key Responsibilities:

Operations Department

  • Assist with policy adjustments and internal process development.
  • Participate in reviews of policies and procedures to support efficiency.
  • Collaborate on new initiatives to enhance operations and service delivery.

Claims Department

  • Observe and assist in claims handling, filing, and processing.
  • Review insurance policies for coverage determination and clarification.
  • Shadow claims representatives in conversations with insureds and claimants.

Finance Department

  • Gain insight into financial processes, including audits, financial statements, and investments.
  • Assist with the preparation and analysis of financial reports.
  • Participate in financial process improvements and learn about regulatory compliance.

Required Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Enthusiasm for learning about the insurance industry.
  • Analytical skills and attention to detail.

Education & Experience:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Business, Finance, Insurance, Risk Management, or a related field.
  • No prior experience required, but a basic understanding of business and/or insurance is a plus.
  • Internship credit eligibility to be discussed with educational institution.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting and computer usage.

Schedule/Location:

  • Monday through Friday from 8am-5pm (Full-Time/hourly).
  • Based in Cedar Rapids, IA. In-office work preferred, but remote work may be considered based on company needs.

Compensation:

  • Compensation will be discussed during the interview process.
