The University of Iowa Department of Epidemiology in the College of Public Health is seeking applicants to support on ongoing study of youth bicycling safety. The Hourly Research Assistant will conduct video annotation and data validation of youth bicycling behaviors, habits, and interactions with other bicyclists, pedestrians, and motor vehicles using a customized Graphical User Interface (GUI).
The position requires an average of 10 hours/week commitment during the semester and 20 hours/week during academic breaks. Applicants should be able to work independently and have strong communication skills. Work hours are very flexible, though weekly team meetings will be scheduled during normal campus business hours.
Dedicated office space will be provided in CPHB and in-person work will be required during initial training period (approx. 1 month). Thereafter, a hybrid work arrangement (office/work-from-home) is possible if the candidate has their own computer with two screens/monitors and reliable high-speed internet access.

Key Responsibilities
• View and annotate events and behaviors within videos of children (ages 9-12) bicycling on roads, sidewalk, trails, and other facilities across Johnson County
• Implement data annotation and validation protocols
• Manage annotation input/output data and track progress
• Assist in the creation and/or correction of incomplete GPS data for use in the GUI
• Attend regular virtual or in-person research meetings
• Provide feedback on the usability of the graphical user interface (GUI) used for annotation
Education Requirement
• Candidates must currently be enrolled as a student in at the University of Iowa
Required Skills/Qualifications
• Strong computer/technological skills; experience with Excel highly desired
• Attention to detail
• Good critical thinking skills
• Strong verbal and written communication skills

• Experience bicycling on streets and roads
• Experience working on a research project
Start/End Dates
• Late March through August 2025, with potential extension beyond August
Compensation
• $18/hr
