Student Pharmacist Intern-Neurology Specialty Clinic

University of Iowa Health Care is seeking student pharmacists currently enrolled at the College of Pharmacy for positions within the specialty pharmacy and the adult neurology clinic.

Position Description

Under general pharmacist supervision, coordinates and performs student intern activities on behalf of the specialty pharmacy and adult neurology clinic. This student will work closely with the adult neurology Clinical Pharmacy Specialists, Support Service Specialist, and other staff within the hospital to support communication with adult neurology clinic, serve as a resource for specialty pharmacy enrollment and / or neurology related pharmacy billing activities, and help resolve requests and issues from staff and patients. The student will report to the Clinical Pharmacy Manager. 

Position Hours

  • Average 10 hours per week (up to 20 hours/week during classes, up to 40 hours/week over breaks)
  • Primarily 2-5 hour shifts M-F 0800-1700

Position Responsibilities Include

  • Document and provide services consistent with established policies, procedures, and accreditation requirements
  • Provide patient / customer service. Communicate with the general public, patients, and other health care personnel in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Provide Specialty Pharmacy services included, but not limited to: assisting patients with triaging insurance-related issues, educating patients on new start specialty medications, conducting follow-ups (via in-person or telephone), and answering drug-related information questions
  • Create resources to improve pharmacy related efficiencies in adult neurology clinic and specialty pharmacy
  • Serve as a resource to staff with related items and enrollment of patients into pharmacy services (i.e., specialty pharmacy)
  • Maintain workspace orderliness and cleanliness
  • Assist in on the job training of new interns or team members
  • Coordinate technical activities with members of the Specialty Pharmacy operations team
  • Complete and maintain compliance with all competencies and education requirements
  • Provide evidence-based care via professional association and institution specific guidelines
  • Within scope of practice and training, assist pharmacist to facilitate pharmaceutical care to patients including but not limited to patient counseling, medication reconciliation, and clinical follow-up
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

  • Currently enrolled as a pharmacy student at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy
  • Must be registered as intern with Iowa Board of Pharmacy prior to commencement of employment 

Rate upon Pharmacy Intern Registration - $18.00/hour
