
Student Pharmacy Technician - Acute Care
The University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics Pharmacy Department is seeking Student Pharmacy Technicians for the Acute Care pharmacies.
Position Summary:
Under general pharmacist and/or technician supervisor’s supervision, coordinates and performs the technical activity in dispensing areas including delivery of medications to hospital patient care areas and clinics from Acute Care Pharmacies. Student will work between 16-20 hrs/week.
Position Responsibilities:
- Document activities (dispensing, inventory, inventory reduction, etc.) on appropriate forms.
- Print the discharged patients list and remove their medications from the patient care unit and the labels for the medication envelopes for the new patients admitted.
- Deliver medications to patient care areas, return medications from patient care areas that are no longer needed.
- Ensure that medication security is maintained when working in the patient care unit medication rooms. This includes the integrity of security (door/lock etc…), security of medications inside the medication room (controlled substances locked properly), medications inside room are stored correctly (properly dated and refrigerated is needed).
- Maintain accurate controls and security regarding controlled substances both in and out of the pharmacy area, including inventory records regarding preparation and delivery to patient care areas.
- Generate, review and maintain (includes filing) appropriate records related to medication distribution and dispensing.(forms 127P, 131)
- Utilize various equipment including computerized label printers and pneumatic tube system.
- Maintain proper handling and proper worker safety precautions regarding medications that are considered hazardous (anti-neoplastic medications) or medications that become hazardous upon waste (EPA designated waste).
- Follow proper procedures in restocking AcuDose Medstations
- Perform other position expectations required of department staff as outlined in department policies and procedures and/or material covered in staff training and/or orientation.
- Perform tasks as assigned by the pharmacist, technician supervisor or Senior Certified technician.
Qualifications:
- Registered with the Pharmacy Board at the time of hire as a pharmacy intern or pharmacy technician, trainee.
- All pharmacy technicians must be certified within one year of employment.
Successful candidates will be subject to a criminal background check.
Starting Hourly rate (non pharmacy intern) - $15/hr
Rate upon Pharmacy Intern Registration - $18/hr
