TRIO SSS Tutor
WHO IS TRIO SSS?
TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally-funded grant program serving 350 first-generation and/or low-income or disabled students on the University of Iowa campus with the goal of successfully guiding these students to graduation.
CURRENT APPLICATION TMELINE INFORMAION:
Regarding the Fall 2025 semester, we are currently reviewing applications for employment starting in the fall semester. We plan to start interviewing applicants before the end of the current semester.
BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Tutors are entrusted with the responsibility of guiding individuals or small groups (2-5 students), aiding them in their journey to not only master course content, but also to evolve into independent, confident, and self-motivated learners. The scheduling is flexible, ranging from 5-15 hours per week, with a competitive starting rate of $13.00 per hour.
We are seeking tutors across a broad spectrum of subjects. However, we consistently observe a high demand for tutors specializing in mathematics, statistics, chemistry, biology, business, and physics.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Facilitate weekly tutoring sessions with eligible students, with the timing and locations mutually agreed upon by the students and the tutor.
- Complete the Tutor Certification Program within the first calendar year of employment and actively participate in other scheduled meetings and training sessions.
- Maintain open lines of communication with the Tutor Coordinator and TRIO SSS staff as necessary.
- Ensure punctuality and preparedness for all scheduled tutoring appointments. Submit detailed reports of each tutoring session within a week of the session.
- Respond promptly to requests from staff and assigned students, ideally within a 24-hour timeframe.
- Regularly monitor your University of Iowa email account (@uiowa.edu), which will serve as the primary channel for all communications with the TRIO SSS staff.
- Be attentive to announcements and material provided in the ICON site provided to hired TRIO SSS Tutors.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Supervision is received from Tutor Coordinator. Observations and debriefing sessions may be conducted by other professional staff.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Tutors are expected to possess the ability to connect with and effectively communicate across a diverse range of individuals. They should exhibit patience and an open-minded willingness to explore innovative learning strategies in a nonjudgmental manner. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 at the University of Iowa is required, along with a grade of ‘B’ or higher in the courses to be tutored, and the courses tutored must have been completed at The University of Iowa. To maintain their employment status, tutors are obligated to uphold a semester GPA of 3.0. Please note that this opportunity is available to students currently enrolled at The University of Iowa, with a particular focus on undergraduate students.
