Accounting Intern

Job Summary:

The purpose of the Iowa Medical Society (IMS) Accounting internship is to gain valuable finance and accounting experience in a non-profit organization. This position will fill a variety of roles within the finance department by supporting the Finance Director with daily, monthly, and annually tasks and projects.

Essential Duties:

Providing general accounting support, including, but not limited to:

  • Creating journal entries and account analysis.
  • Assisting with reconciliations for balance sheet and expense accounts.
  • Researching and resolving any discrepancies or accounting issues.
  • Organizing and maintaining work files and documents.
  • Providing timely information for annual audits upon request.
  • Assisting with annual budget planning.
  • Assisting with month-end and year-end closing.
  • Assisting with preparation of financial report to the Executive Committee and the Board.
  • Completing additional projects or duties as assigned.
  • Willingness to assist with special projects and urgent team priorities to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to keep confidential information and work in office 10 hours/week

Educational/Experience Requirements:

  • Student or recent college graduate studying accounting, finance, business, or related field.
  • Strong Excel and Power Point skills (may be tested during the hiring process)
  • Knowledge of QuickBooks Online or similar cloud-based programs.
  • Must have strong calculation and analysis skills, detailed orientation, and positive attitude.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing a variety of topics and assignments; membership-organization-related or association experience is a plus, but not required.
