Rec Services - Lifeguard - Campus Recreation and Wellness Center

BASIC FUNCTION

Responsible for ensuring the safety of all patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies in Recreational Services Pools.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies.
  • Enforce policies, rules, and regulations for all Recreational Services pools.
  • Inspect the facility and report any unsafe conditions or equipment to the supervisor.
  • Perform maintenance and cleaning duties for general upkeep of the facility.
  • Perform pool chemical tests and complete chemical logs.
  • Complete records and reports.
  • Track and record pool user attendance.
  • Attend and participate in regularly scheduled in-service training sessions.
  • Maintain fitness level (swimming skills, strength, and endurance).
  • Maintain lifeguarding skills and knowledge on an ongoing basis.
  • Maintain current certifications including any additional safety training.
  • Assist as needed with setup and teardown of aquatic center events.
  • Ensure appropriate pool setup for aquatic center programs.
  • Open and close pool areas during aquatic programs.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned by supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Mandatory attendance at regularly scheduled in-service trainings.
  • Ability to use independent judgment when needed.
  • Must be a currently enrolled high school or college student.

WORK HOURS

  • Work schedule of 90 minutes per scheduled shift. The number of shifts available are between 5:45 AM and 10:00 PM. It is flexible on how many shifts per week staff want to work.
  • Availability during University breaks (e.g. Thanksgiving, Winter Break, Spring Break and Summer) is preferred.

LOCATION

  • Campus Recreation & Wellness Center (CRWC) 

NEW HIRE REQUIREMENTS

  • American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED is required or Professional Rescuer.
  • Perform pre-employment skills test:
  • 100 yard swim completed in <1:45 minutes
  • 1 minute tread with a 10lb diving brick
  • Retrieval of object from 17 ft depth
  • Completion of University of Iowa Bloodborne Pathogens training
  • Recreational Services Orientation

NOTE:

Certifications can be obtained from the Grant Wood Area American Red Cross Chapter, which is based out of Cedar Rapids. Information on all of the upcoming classes that are going on in different facilities in the area. You may also check Recreational Services website (http://recserv.uiowa.edu/programs/aquatics/certification-classes) to see if any classes are added.
