Camp Counselor

June - August 2019 • Nisswa, MN

What I liked

Everything! I made so many friends and had such a good time just hanging out outside all summer. Minnesota is gorgeous that time of year.

What I wish was different

The time off was very limited so it’s a very exhausting job. But worth it

Advice

Only do it if you’re dedicated to the idea of being a camp counselor. You gotta be willing to put in the effort.

Wilderness Activity Director

May - August 2019 • Lake Hubert, MN

What I liked

My favorite part of my job at Camp Lake Hubert was the camp community. The campers come back year after year to be with friends and try new things, and the counselors are amazing. Counselors are supportive and caring and they do a lot to make camp an amazing place. Although being a counselor is a lot of work, it is well worth it when you see the impact you have on campers.

What I wish was different

I wish session break was longer so you got to know your cabin staff for second session. However with the date changes for the 2020 summer, session break will be longer. I think this will be a good change for camp and the staff.

Advice

As a camp counselor you should be focused on the campers. This makes the experience rewarding and enjoyable.

Activities Director for Trips

May - August 2019 • Nisswa, MN

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to work with kids and teach them how to be in the outdoors while taking care of the environment around them. Also, the entire staff there was amazing and working with the people there was the best part of the experience.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a clearer understanding of what kind of a job I would be doing before I got there.

Advice

I would suggest that because it is a time consuming and very active job that anyone who works there should take every opportunity for self-care that they can.

Riflery Director

May - August 2019 • Nisswa, MN

What I liked

Meeting new people. Getting to know the campers and the camp experience in general! It was really fun and definitely something I will never forget and gave me so much experience.

What I wish was different

I wish they would have informed us more and gave us more time off. We had to respect their time but it didn't seem like they respected ours all the time.

Advice

Be all in. If you'er going to go to a camp you're there 24/7 so you should just dive in and give it your all!

Emergency Medical Technician

May - August 2018 • Nisswa, MN

What I liked

I really enjoyed the atmosphere, meeting new people from all around the world, and getting to help kids.

What I wish was different

I wish the counselors would have had more free time to recuperate.

Advice

It was one of the most difficult things I have ever done, but completely worth it. Stick with it and you won't regret it!

Camp Counselor

May - August 2018 • Nisswa, MN

What I liked

Being able to save the majority of my paycheck, the staff, the kids, the wide variety of activities

What I wish was different

I wish there had been a longer session break and more support from superiors.

Advice

It truly is a lot of work and you have to be dedicated and ready to do it. If you are feeling doubtful throughout the beginning, during the period of staff training, think about leaving before kids come. If you do not enjoy first session, tough it out until session break and leave before second session. Even if it seems like all the kids hate you, it is really difficult on the campers when a counselor leaves mid-session.
