Clean Water Action-Michigan

Grassroots Canvasser

May - August 2019 • Ann Arbor, MI

What I liked

I loved the experience of knocking on doors and talking to perfect strangers about improving water policy in Michigan to protect Michiganders and save us money. Environmental policy is my academic area of interest so it was great to talk to 50+ people a day about something I really care about. The staff is also amazing, I made some lifetime friends. I also liked going all over Michigan, a state I've lived in my entire life, and getting a feel for the views and values of people in different areas.

What I wish was different

Nothing in particular. They use a tried and true model for successful and efficient canvassing. They train you very well, so you feel prepared when you go out to canvass and are getting feedback throughout the training process. You are also always praised when you have a particularly good day in terms of fundraising or mobilizing.

Advice

Take your observation day and the first day of canvassing seriously. Pay attention to everything your field manager does because everything they do is for a reason. Also, go in with an open mind every single day.

The environment at Clean Water Action is amicable and welcoming. All of the employees, on all levels were passionate about sharing their work with new employees. I had started earlier/left later.

Advice

Lean into the training. Ask for the opportunity to cross train and for management training if possible.

The work environment was great! Working with others committed to a cause is empowering. I also had much opportunity to travel and learn about environmental policy-making from a grassroots perspective. I gained experience lobbying, too.

What I wish was different
