What I liked

Culture was great, ie no IB hours, and everyone was relaxed as expected of the research department Worked with several economists one on one, gave a lot of insight into the research being done for relevant policies Everyone in the intern cohort was smarter than you, so great for motivation Projects actually mattered: Project I worked on has a chance on becoming the starting point for someone's paper later on.

What I wish was different

On me, but I wish I talked with more economists I didn't work directly under more often.

Advice

Your bosses are people too, and more often than not they're people just waiting for someone to ask about their research.

What I liked

I enjoyed how flexible the Fed was, given our current circumstances. The entire internship program was seamlessly transformed into an online rotational internship. I got to experience 6 of the groups within the Fed, which gave me an extremely well-rounded and informative understanding of the Bank's various functions and responsibilities. I really enjoyed how much interaction the interns had with senior economists and department managers. Everyone was very outgoing and easy to speak with; in fact, they were very enthusiastic about the interns' experiences, and would often take time out of their busy calendars to have virtual 1-on-1 coffee chats or lunch and learn discussions with us. Overall, I learned so much and realized how much I loved the Fed's collaborative and collegial culture.

What I wish was different

One thing that I wish had been different was the length of the program. It was initially supposed to be a full 8 weeks long, but because of the pandemic, it got shortened to 6 and a half weeks. Also, I wish I got to experience the program in person so I could have met my fellow intern class and my manager. While the virtual experience was still amazing, nothing can top the face-to-face connection of working in the office. Overall though, I am extremely happy with my internship experience and was blessed to have met and worked with such intelligent and kind people over this past summer.

Advice

One piece of advice I'd share is to take full advantage of all the resources and opportunities you are given! The senior economists and employees of the Fed were extremely receptive of our time, and really encouraged us to ask questions and speak up. They wanted us to make the most of our virtual experience, so whenever we had the time, we were encouraged to put some time on some employee's calendar so you could do a 15-20 minute Webex call and learn about their role. In the beginning, I was very shy and reluctant to put myself out there, because I worried I would say the wrong thing or come off as unintelligent. But then I realized thanks to my supervisor and my fellow interns that perfecting the art of networking requires a lot of practice and there it no better way to improve than to just put yourself out there. Don't be afraid to speak up if you have any questions or want to learn about something specific from someone. Be proactive and take that initiative - you will thank yourself later!

What I liked

The people were amazing. There was a very open culture and a flat organization.

What I wish was different

The recruiters say that 80% of interns return to the Bank; but that number is probably around the 40% and it varies by group. Some groups can be very competitive and the interview process is poorly designed and rushed. We also got notifications of interviews with less than 24 hours in advance.

Advice

I would recommend it if you know for sure that you want to work there post undergrad or if you are a grad student. Not a good place to be ambivalent about because people pick up on it. Highly recommend it if its a sophomore internship.

What I liked

It was a great experience being surrounded by other interns who were lots of fun and very dedicated to their work. The New York Fed is also a great place to do research because it is at the heart of monetary policy and financial regulation. Plus, New York is a lot of fun.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to develop some of my coding skills in different languages.

Advice

Be ready to code, a lot. It's also a very different research environment from Swarthmore and takes a little bit of adjustment.
