Kunkel & Associates, Inc.

Transportation Sales Intern

May - August 2022 • Overland Park, KS

What I liked

I really liked that at Kunkel I felt very welcome, it can be very intimidating going to a company where everyone knows each other and knows the processes but at Kunkel I felt like it was okay to ask questions and felt like family by the end of the first week. I also have noticed that many sales internships have you do the "diet" version of what you may do in the future but at Kunkel we were able to take our role as far as we wanted to talking with real clients and potential clients on a daily basis. Travel is a must in a job for me and with Kunkel over the summer I was able to spend time in Dallas, Kansas City, Chicago, and Dubuque.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have found Kunkel the year before and would have been able to do two summers with them!

Advice

I highly suggest not only focusing on the sales aspect of the job but learning what people through the whole company do one of my favorite things was to spend time with people from other departments to learn how they contribute to the overall goal of the company.

Transportation Sales Intern

What I liked

Kunkel & Associates exceeded my expectations. As an intern, I was tasked with the same jobs as full-time employees. There was not a single day over the summer where I was stuck doing busy work. I also liked the travel opportunities! I was able to spend multiple days in Chicago and Minneapolis meeting with potential/current clients. Being able to see the sales process from initial phone call to the final sale was very rewarding.

What I wish was different

Nothing! I really enjoyed the company culture. Kunkel has been one of the few jobs I have had where I actually enjoyed coming into work each morning. The events outside of work are also very fun. I was able to build better relationships with other employees through the Kunkel slow-pitch softball team, playing golf, and other social events.

Advice

Be eager to learn. The first couple weeks of the internship consisted of a lot of meetings and training. However, without this I would not have been set up for nearly as much success.

What I liked

Kunkel is an amazing company that value the work hard play hard attitude! The culture here is unbelievably open, supportive, and fun. Kunkel provided me the one on one mentorship I needed as a young professional and was open to all my questions. They also got me involved within the community through young professional lunches and intern meetings.

What I wish was different

Nothing! I loved my experience with Kunkel. Everything from their training and development to their culture!

Advice

If you’re considering applying at Kunkel and Associates, just apply! I promise you will not regret it! Working for Kunkel has been very rewarding and is a great way to be introduced into the professional world!

Insurance Analyst Intern

May - August 2020 • Dubuque, IA

What I liked

Most places have their interns just do busy work, but interns at Kunkel do stuff that actually matters. By the second week I was already working on projects that would help clients for years to come! It is also a very fun company to work for! Due to Covid I only got to experience a fraction of the Kunkel culture and I still had an absolute blast! Lastly, everyone is extremely helpful, considerate, and they truly take care of all their employees! I would definitely recommend this Kunkel & Associates to anyone!

What I wish was different

There was some things that I missed out on due to the pandemic but Kunkel did as good of a job as they could. While other companies cancelled or shortened their internships, Kunkel did everything they could to give me the best experience possible!

Advice

Be ready to be challenged and learn A LOT! Most interns don't know much about insurance coming in and there is a lot to know so it takes some time to learn. Don't get frustrated if you are very confused or a little lost the first few weeks.

They truly pushed me to do my best work. They had me working on things that actually benefitted the company and not just stuff to make the time go by.

What I wish was different

Nothing

Advice

Be open about what you think about the internship during the internship. Figure out if this is a company you want to work for as they figure out if they would like you to work their as well.
