rehabilitation assistant

January - June 2021 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

I loved the staff! They were amazing and always ready to help. They all love their job and treat their patients well. I had an amazing opportunity to shadow, and got such a great experience.

What I wish was different

I wish I could've worked more, however I was in school so that didn't work.

Advice

I would say to make connections! These are great people you get to work with and they know a lot about the health care and other things so talk to them. I would also say take patients seriously and treat them right and with respect and develop your patient care skills.

It intern

June - August 2021 • Rochester, MN

What I liked

I loved working with the people in the Center for Digital Health; all of them were super friendly and always willing to answer any questions I had.

What I wish was different

I wish the project I would be working on would have been better defined before starting the internship.

Advice

Focus on concepts that will transfer, not one specific item or software.

Clinical Research Coordinator

June 2021 • Rochester, MN

What I liked

I love my boss and the people I work with. Everyone is super helpful and make me feel comfortable enough to ask questions

What I wish was different

I wish I could have been in person more rather then being on my own at home. I know I would have been in person if covid wasn't a thing.

Advice

My piece of advice is to just be proactive and find ways to motivate yourself to stay on track and entertained. I found a new love for podcast while I worked.

Clinical Research Intern

June - August 2021 • Jacksonville, FL

What I liked

Mayo Clinic's staff and the managers of the program were extremely organized and diligent with leading the program and students. Participating in clinical research at the Mayo Clinic is an absolutely amazing experience, and it is so valuable. I got to work 1-on-1 with an internal medicine physician and his colleagues on their study.

What I wish was different

I honestly cannot imagine anything being different. I genuinely have no complaints.

Advice

Definitely know what you're going into. I had no idea what clinical research even was before applying for this internship, but I wish that I did.

Summer III

June - August 2018 • Rochester, MN

What I liked

I loved being a part of the innovation that is Mayo. Every team member was ready to help me learn; RN, attending, respiratory therapists- they all were more than ready to teach.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have had more ICU experience, but was more than thankful for all my time there.

Advice

Ask questions and more questions. Ask for what you want; ex. I’m very interested in emergency nursing and they made a seminar for our group and we got to tour the ED.

Clinical Assistant

June - August 2018 • Rochester, MN

What I liked

Working at Mayo Clinic was wonderful due to the amazing group of nurses/techs as well as other administrative staff with whom I worked with. I was also able to interact with all walks of life as patients came from all different types of backgrounds. Interacting with patients helped further my empathy for others which was something I was not expecting going in.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more of a variety of tasks to do. My whole job consisted of just a handful of tasks that were easily manageable and made the day a little boring.

Advice

Being in a recovery room, the nurses and techs really appreciated when I would help make beds or offer to walk patients when the rush periods where in full force. So, the advice I would share would be to help out when "you" are not busy as it sets up a better relationship with staff when everyone is helping one another.

Radiology, Informatics, and Artificial Intelligence Research Intern

June - August 2018 • Rochester, MN

What I liked

I thoroughly enjoyed problem solving alongside PhDs and other interns to find the most efficient and effective ways to conduct our research and process data. The work was challenging, and the other people in the lab created a stimulating, learning environment.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time to touch-base with the head of our lab. Unfortunately, due to the nature of our work and the extremely busy schedule of the person, this was not feasible.

Advice

Do not be afraid to expand your personal network. Just by working in this lab at Mayo Clinic, I established many connections and was able to shadow two world-renowned surgeons.
